NROTC Board Review Schedule

Are the MO side load and 2 year national scholarship applications considered at the Feb 28-3 March board also?

@Anchor7 Congratulations to your DS ! My DS is also awaiting news from the NROTC and is also from NY-LI region. Can you provide any stats from your DS application ? Curiosity is getting the best of us and like everyone else, we are wondering what his chances of selection might be.

what stats are you interested in?

@Anchor7 Just wondering about the SAT, ACT, GPA scores because my DS had his application submitted in early November and has been passed over by a couple of boards already. Curiosity is getting the best of me. He has good alternatives already lined up but I am trying to get a feel for his chances of NROTC scholarship. Once again, congratulations to you and your DS>

thanks -I know it's so hard waiting for a decision, we are blessed. FYI, He was turned down by the USCGA (applied Early Action)
SAT Math 710 English 710 ACT 32
GPA 97 Class Rank 16 out of 250 - not a recruited athlete, but plays Varsity sports.
Volunteer and community service (but no Sea Cadets, Boy Scouts, etc.)
I do know his interview went very well. Not sure how much that factors. Best of luck to your DS!

In reviewing applications at a board, is it a "1st in and 1st out" regardless of strength of application?

Yes and no. Let's assume it's first in, and I think it is. Each board reviews the max number of applications they can in the time allotted. Some of those will be awarded a scholarship and some will not. Those who don't receive a scholarship are rolled over to the next board automatically. So it's definitely not first out. Some may have their application done in time for the first board, and reviewed at that board - but they may not hear anything (good or bad) until April.

Does anyone know if it's pretty consistent with the amount that they accept each board, or do they accept / fill more towards the end?

Somewhere in my DS' scholarship notification materials it said the majority of scholarships are awarded in March and April. I guess that makes sense, because then they have all the applications in and know what the quality of the pool looks like. I bet @NavyNOLA would have more detailed information.

Do they look at dodmerb results in awarding scholarships? Since my DS has applied to a SA, his dodmerb exam has been completed. He will require a waiver. I was wondering if this will hurt his chances of getting a scholarship.

No.

NROTC won't even begin their DoDMERB process until after the scholarship has been awarded. At that time they will find the medical stuff and will then decide on whether to pursue a waiver.

NSTC portions out the scholarships so that the number awarded at each board is fairly comparable (there were about 100 navy option scholarships awarded at the last board). There are four boards (out of about 11 for this year) in the months of March and April alone, so there are still plenty to be awarded later in the season.

Some questions:
- NROTC Board is meeting this week (Feb 6-10)?
- After the board meets, the applicants files who were awarded a scholarship are then sent to a school placement committee?
- Does the committee contact the applicants 1st choice schools to discuss the scholarship applicant before placing the scholarship at the applicant's 1st choice school?
- Scholarship recipients are notified around Feb 24th?

I don't think the process of scholarship placement is that complicated. If there is room at the first choice school the scholarship goes there. If not they move to the second choice school. etc. NROTC units do not have influence or approval over where a scholarship gets placed.

I wish it was more strategic. Tight coordination between NROTC committee, NROTC ivy commander, and ivy admissions. Due to this intel it would give applicants the best chance to be placed and be accepted.......

Only at schools where NROTC has some influence overt the college's admissions process. At most schools they don't. It's the responsibility of the applicant to keep their school choices reasonable.

What is a reasonable candidate for any ivy is the $64,000 question? Everything we have read she is above or at 75th percentile for HYP. Has all her extracurricular stuff and sports leadership...etc..! Hard working kid and wants to be Naval Officer. She has already been admitted to some outstanding schools so she is trying to figure this all out. Reaching for her dreams while also being reasonable.
