NROTC Boards

Just so I understand, as portal still says "no decision yet....". There was the board that met last week. Results may or may not be out. Might take around 10-15 days. Next board is next week (19-22). Results could be out by the 27th or after May 1. How does one make plans after May 1? My son has a plan b, and is going forward with that, but it is not an NROTC school. If he finds out after May 1 he is awarded the scholarship, but decisions to those schools were due May 1, what happens then? So confusing! and I would think they should give decisions one way or another by May 1.

We have the exact same dilemma.

My DS got into his #1 choice which also has an NROTC Unit, so we don't have that dilemma. However, I feel you regarding the waiting game, as we also are waiting to hear on a scholarship award. Presumably you could put a deposit down on both schools, knowing you will lose one of them. That might be your only option.

We've thought about putting two deposits down but I think its considered unethical. Really not supposed to do that, unless you have heard otherwise?

I would agree. You are occupying two spots and someone else is waiting for one of them. But, I am not sure what other options you will have.

I agree unethical. The plan b school would become plan a if no nrotc scholarship. Cost for his first choice without nrotc is just not financially possible. We know he could potentially apply for scholarship again next year at that school, but again there is no guarantee. Plan b has a great program and he can still become an officer, just a different path.

Off topic, but may help some. Is you son interested in Subs? The Navy offers the Nuclear Propulsion Officer Candidate Program (NUPOC). It offers scholarship money to pay for your degree and provides a regular monthly income while you’re still in school. And the school does not need to be a NROTC school.

This is definitely something mine would be interested in. He’s going into ME with a minor in nuclear. He absolutely wants to work on a sub!

Just got word this evening that my DS did not receive the NROTC Scholarship. He's very bummed. It said they would send us a letter to notify us of his options. What other options? I feel like the coordinator did not really know anything about the Scholarship program because he did not suggest anything. And from I'm reading on this forum, some kids applied to several ROTC's - didn't even know you could do that. I think I read that he can still get into the NROTC at Boston University and apply again as a Freshman, but if they didn't select him now, why would they select him later?

Word through the portal?

Don't despair. He can enter the NROTC unit at BU as a "programmer." These area number of non scholarship members of the battalion. Some are vying for a scholarship by their sophomore year. Others are testing the waters to determine if NROTC and serving as a Navy Officer is their correct path without an financial obligations. At my son's battalion probably half the 4C's are programmers. Some have already voluntarily dropped but most are moving forward hoping for the scholarship. Luckily my DS is on the 4 year scholarship but I have DS number two starting the process for class of 2026. He has plan A, B, C, D, E, & F. The first 5 are ROTC/SA applications. Plan F is college programmer. If your DS is committed to the process as a programmer he has a good chance of achieving the scholarship as a sophomore or junior.

Actually, it is quite common for non-scholarship students to join NROTC; it’s known as college program. If your DS/DD does well in school & in the unit, I dare say most get a 2 or 3 year scholarship & get commissioned!
Very true!

💯! That will be the route of DS if he doesn’t win a scholarship... The Battalion told him they would help him & were pretty confident in their % of programmers who ultimately win a 2 or 3 year scholarship....

Because he demonstrated superior performance as a member of the unit during his freshman year. DS joined without the scholarship and received one sophomore year.

The other options will explain all other paths to a commission including joining NROTC without a scholarship and OCS. Marine Options can also commission through the Platoon Leader's Course.

Thank you everyone. So if he enters the BU NROTC as a college programmer, what will set him up to stand out when he applies again in the Fall? Besides do his best in whatever they ask him to do in the NROTC, and academics, what else should he strive to do to prove himself to the Board again?
