NROTC Boards

Thank you everyone. So if he enters the BU NROTC as a college programmer, what will set him up to stand out when he applies again in the Fall? Besides do his best in whatever they ask him to do in the NROTC, and academics, what else should he strive to do to prove himself to the Board again?
Agree with md61. I would add to volunteer for duties wherever, and whenever he can.

So, his plan B is not to go into the military if he doesn't get an NROTC scholarship?
Still very interested. Plan B is a in state school with his program. He would complete his 4 year degree there then join the Navy as an officer. Although the NROTC schools are fantastic, financially they are not doable without the scholarship. Nor am I willing to co-sign for that amount of student loans. Yes, he could apply again next year for the scholarship if he was at one of the schools, but 65k a year vs. 25k is a huge difference.

Makes sense. I guess I would be skeptical of OCS being an absolute deal. I guess a lot can change in 4 years and NROTC is offered at a lot fewer schools so the options are more limited. Best of luck to your DS. I truly hope it all works out for you.

Just got word this evening that my DS did not receive the NROTC Scholarship. He's very bummed. It said they would send us a letter to notify us of his options. What other options? I feel like the coordinator did not really know anything about the Scholarship program because he did not suggest anything. And from I'm reading on this forum, some kids applied to several ROTC's - didn't even know you could do that. I think I read that he can still get into the NROTC at Boston University and apply again as a Freshman, but if they didn't select him now, why would they select him later?
It's quite common for applicants not to be selected as high school seniors and to be selected in the next year (for a 3-year national scholarship). This happened for my son. So he started at his university as a College Programmer. Commissioning as SWO next month!

Always nice to hear - thank you for sharing. We’re still waiting for a decision but DS will participate as a Programmer w/ hopes of being selected for a 3-year scholarship. Fingers crossed 🤞🏻!

My DS was a college reapplicant last year and was awarded a 4 year National scholarship during the last board. Don't give up hope!
Congratulations 🎉 to your DS! The NROTC battalion is more than happy to help him w/ the application process next year, if he isn’t awarded one as a HS senior. I feel bad if he were to miss out on the NSI experience but I would surely get over that 😉.....
