Hello all,
My ACT/SAT test scores are low and won't make me eligible for the scholarship. If I was to join the university's NROTC unit, what are my options for another scholarship.

I know there are two-three year ones, how often are the given out, and is it on university or national basis? Will I be the only college programmer? Any suggestions are helpful.

You can re-apply in the fall of your freshman year for a 4 year NROTC scholarship. You can complete some or most of the application over the summer, but do not submit it until after you join the battalion and get guidance / assistance from your new unit. All NROTC scholarships and advanced standing are national awards. It is possible that you could be the only college programmer, but unlikely. It will vary unit to unit and year to year. In my DS class 5 of the 25 freshman are college programmers. At least one was awarded a 4 year scholarship. In his unit it is difficult to know who is on scholarship and who is a college programmer, because all the freshman are treated the same.

Suggestions? Do well in all your unit, do well academically. Take 2 semesters of calculus your freshman year. Consider taking physics freshman year. As a college programmer your college performance is what will count. HS grades and SAT/ACT scores will have little to no impact.

Agree with 5Day. DS's unit was 50-50 scholarship/college programmer in the beginning.

Thanks for suggestions, but I am confused on the wording. So when the 2017 application opens I can apply for the 4 year scholarship again but I have to join and notify the university's unit first? I thought since I wasn't accepted, I was able to join the unit freshman year and get at least a 3 year scholarship?

You can reapply for the 4 year as long as you don't have 30 hours of college credit -- making you a sophomore. It simply gives you another path for scholarship -- with the other paths being sideload scholarships.

My son got awarded a 4 year scholarship the first semester of his Freshman year. It won't kick in, however, until the following academic year -- in effect making it a 3 year.

The other option is getting the sideload scholarship. The unit staff will aid in that process. Do well and establish yourself and take advantage of any paths available.

Do I still need my high school councilor and ACT/SAT scores?

YES. College Programmer apply for the exact same 4-year National during the first semester of college. You can't apply for the side loads until you have 30 credits- so, after freshman year. The side loads don't consider high school records and standardized test scores; the National does.

Do I have to wait until I get a rejection letter and start a new one, or can I start one when the application opens?

You won't get rejected because you never had a completed application......

You can start a new one in April, assuming you've met the minimum ACT scores by taking it again.
