I was just asked if I would like to attend CORTRAMID East or West. I live in North Carolina, but I was really considering going West just because I would really love to visit San Diego. So, a couple of questions: do I have to pay for airfare? Is Cortramid East a better option?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Navy pays air fare. They will arrange your flight and send orders. On one of DS's summer cruises (not CORTRAMID) DS got to sail from Norfolk to San Diego via the Panama Canal. Best of both worlds.

Usually there is not a choice, so go for it.

I'm surprised that your fellow MIDN didn't answer this for you, at our unit the annual CORTRAMID brief is eagerly anticipated (it's not only interesting but also hilarious). It usually boils down to the MIDN who went West talking about how much of a great time they had, and the MIDN who went East lying about the same.

Go West. When I was a mid, many years ago, I did COTRAMID out of San Diego and was sent to Hawaii for Submarine week!

You are fortunate your unit asked your preference. My DS unit used the Mississippi River as the divider...if you lived East of it, you go East, west you go west.

Awesome to see plans in motion for this!

Are you a college freshman ? I ask because sophomores were unable to do Contramid this summer due to COVID-19 and I’m wondering if they will (hopefully) get the opportunity

Thanks and good luck 🍀

One additional consideration on E vs W is timing. When held it's not concurrent in recent years. Confirm when each session is and just ensure you wouldn't have a strong preference based on being able to attend a graduation party, or wedding or whatnot.

Yes, I am a college freshman. I don't have to do NSI, and unfortunately I think the 3/C lost their Cortramid.
Yes, unfortunately they (3C) did.
Hopefully they will be able to make it up in Summer 2021, together with you 4C. It sounds like an amazing (and necessary) opportunity.

Best wishes.

CORTRAMID

The summer after first year, rising third class Midshipmen go either to Norfolk or San Diego for Cortramid. Here they spend four weeks getting acquainted with different parts of the Navy – Surface, Submarine, Aviation, and Marine. Hopefully after a week with each community, they will have a better idea of how they desire to serve in the Naval forces.

@Azzurri - Cortramid is a nice exposure to the various communities but it is in no way "necessary" for Midshipmen. Over the years, the program has been impacted by budget issues and other operational demands that alter the experience. For instance, there have been years where the Aviation week involves no flights - only looking a static displays.

I am not attempting to be argumentative and I fully support the event, but if missed it will not substantially affect a midshipman's progress.

+1 to USMCGrunr. Many midshipmen, aka college programmers, have done just fine over the years. Some mids think it's a waste probably because they're already settled on a community.

I am current 4/c and haven’t heard anything about summer trainings. You heard that NSI has been canceled for us and we’re going to CORTRAMID? This is exciting if true!

Great news for 4/C midshipmen - daughter’s senior year of HS and freshman year of NROTC have been wrecked by COVID-19 thus far, I hope this can stay scheduled.

I will remain hopeful for your 4/C class as well! My 3/C didn't get his summer CORTRAMID, but did experience NSI the year prior. It's been a bumpy year, all around.
