I am now fully committed to going to a college in Los Angeles, but, it does not have NROTC. I tried calling UCLA once and they said that they do not support cross town NROTC, and they said USC wouldn't either (USC was very difficult to reach). Does anybody know if there is any cross town NROTC in Los Angeles area? Or if there is any way for me to join an NROTC program at another place whilst enrolled in a school that does not have NROTC in Los Angeles?

Only the schools that are a host unit or cross town affiliation with the host school can do NROTC. The school has to have the infrastructure in place (place to meet, NAV class availability, ect). to have a NROTC unit. So if the school you are committed to is not UCLA or USC, then you are not able to do NROTC.

Here is the list of schools that can do NROTC

Is this due to financial reasons? If NROTC is really your goal, being set only on one city is severely limiting. If it's because of finances, I would look to schools that offer free room and board with ROTC

I don't recommend crosstown ROTC, especially in Los Angeles where traffic is a nightmare even on the best of days. I agree with the above: if ROTC is your goal, be flexible with the city.

I mean I live in Los Angeles, I'm already raised in it lol

Just beware that you'll most likely have to travel to the crosstown unit for 3 mornings of PT with the unit and the Lab class - you might not be able to schedule your other classes to give you enough time to do those.

This doesn’t solve the root of the issue. Being tied down to a single city is severely limiting in a city that has little ROTC options. Why not branch out to other cities?

I'll try that too. But there aren't really many options in SoCal to begin with. The closest thing would be San Diego. But I'll see what I can do

Just remember not to order a whopper at McDonald’s or the McGriddle at Burger King. You want NROTC then pursue it at a school that hosts or has a cross town affiliation agreement. Otherwise you’ll join the surprisingly large group of candidates who self eliminate. .

There is a Los Angeles consortium, but it has been a while and I am not sure which colleges belong to them. I take it you are not interested in UCLA?

San Diego is a Navy town. But I think that people are hinting for you to think bigger. As in farther away from home. There are NROTC units all the way from LA to the Midwest to the East Coast. There are many options.

I could try that, but, I dont have a car. At least yet.

I’m concerned you seem to be seeking to go to a specific Los Angeles based college (you said now fully committed) which neither hosts nor participates as a cross town for NROTC and yet still you are still wishing to participate in NROTC. Something has to give. A switch of colleges, a switch to a ROtC branch that IS at the school you are fully committed to….

If you attend a university that hosts a NROTC unit you would not need a car. Also you might from a cross town confirm if there is a van or fellow midshipman with a vehicle that you could chip in for gas etc.

Find a solution as you would like or join the many who start a. Application but don’t make it to commission. Good luck.

My son is AROTC at USD and they provide transportation to cross town with SDSU.
I think they are the host for NROTC. SD is a good option with lots of schools. UCSD, is also part of the AROTC Battalion.

You misunderstand. You want to join NROTC in LA. There are only 2 schools that you can attend (USC, UCLA). If that doesn’t work for you, next closest is to move to San Diego for college and do NROTC at one of the schools there. If that doesn’t work for you, then you will have to move farther from home for college ( Northern Cal, Oregon / Washington state, Midwest, Southeast U.S., East Coast).

A large amount of people in my ROTC unit never had a car. Not necessary for college, especially if you pickup scholarship and go to school for free and get free room and board.
