NROTC GPA Requirement

It is my understanding currently there is a minimum 2.5 GPA per semester requirement for the NROTC scholarship and college programs. I also understand that about a year ago, Admiral John M. Richardson issued a directive which reflects this GPA requirement with some discretion whereby a first year Midshipman with less than a 2.50 GPA in their first semester of their first year (e.g., 2.06) could be offered the opportunity by their NROTC unit to raise their GPA to 2.5 or above by the end their second semester in their first year.

Is my understanding correct? If not, what is the current GPA requirement for the NROTC scholarship and college programs?

Thanks.

The standard is 2.5, both for semester and cumulative GPA. If a student fails to meet/maintain that, the unit will take administrative action, typically in the form of a PRB. It all depends on what the GPA and the particulars are. A first semester freshman that has below a 2.5 but above a 2.0 is most likely looking at a warning or probation. However, failing certain classes, such as those required for your major, naval science classes, or calc/phys could make the consequences more severe. All depends on the exact nature of the situation.

NavyNola, thanks for the quick reply and insight. Also, what is a PRB? In addition, is there a source that you can point to that says the standard is 2.5, both for semester and cumulative GPA, which applies to all NROTC programs? Thanks.

PRB = Performance Review Board.
You do NOT want one of these.

The standard was changed by Admiral Evans, Commander NSTC, this June. It applies to all NROTC mids.

NavyNola, thanks for the reply. Does this changed GPA standard apply starting in June 2016 and to all NROTC mids regardless of when they started NROTC? For example, the same GPA standard applies to a NROTC freshman and a NRTOC junior? Also, what was the GPA standard pre-June 2016?

I'm sorry, I should have been more specific. The change applies to students entering the program in fall 2016. Those already in the program were kept under previous standards (2.5 semester GPA/2.0 cumulative GPA).

Not a problem NavyNola. Got it. Mids in NROTC as of June 2016 - GPA standards 2.5 semester/2.0 cumulative. Mids starting NROTC after June 2016 - GPA standards 2.5 semester/2.5 cumulative.

NavyNola, want to send you a PM and not able to find how to do so. Admin. rules say need at least 5 posts to do so and I have 5 posts.

I believe it has been moved up to 10 posts...
May I suggest you go post some comments on @Capt MJ's wonderful Christmas cookies on the off-topic forum.

In addition (at least at DS' former unit), the student may be required to attend mandatory study hours. Not sure of the nature of your kid's situation, but often student's can get peer-to-peer tutoring as many of the NROTC midshipmen take the same classes.
