Hi. My daughter applied and interviewed for NROTC in June and the recruiter called us yesterday to say she was recommending her for an Immediate Scholarship Reservation. This was a huge surprise for us (though a good one) . She has to interview with the commanding officer when she gets back to the US in August. (She applied on the LREC track and is studying Arabic this summer on a state department strategic languages scholarship.) any tips for this? Thank you in advance!
 
Personally, don't change a thing. If she was good enough the first round to get offered a chance to interview with the commanding officer for an ISR, do exactly the same thing and she should have a great chance of getting the ISR. I am sure her summer studies will give her a lot more to talk about.
 
Agree. If you search on this forum, you will find others who earned ISR scholarships who share their experiences.

Thank you! Wondering mainly about interview and how it compares to initial interview? Also wondered about your experience with getting Award so early (a great thing) but how it works if you don't wind up getting into the school they award you for?

What my DS was told about the subsequent interview by the Lientenant that conducted his intial interview that it was a case where he recommended DS to meet with the regional commander, and they scrutinized his application further.

My daughter was an ISR recipient in August 2016. I don't know if this is how your situation has evolved, but my daughter had her initial interview, then the interviewer told us he was commenting her for an ISR. The follow up interview with the commanding officer really seemed liked a perfunctory event in a sense. She asked a few questions then presented the ISR and offered us time review the agreement before we signed it. She was very nice about everything. But, if you're daughter was recommended, I wouldn't worry too much about the interview. Just have her present herself as she did in the initial interview.

Hi and congratulations to you and your DD, I have a question, is she a High School Senior?, or College student? just asking because I understand the Critical Language Program is for College students, or can HS students can apply too?. Thank you.
 
I got a ISR scholarship in January set to start this fall. I met with the XO at my state's recruiting center. I was told that the scholarship was "mine to lose". Your daughter is most likely one of the best candidates. Her application is one of the best they have this year. She should be fine as long as she seems consistent with her application during the interview. My biggest advice is to make sure the interviewer knows she wants to serve in the navy. I told the XO that interviewed me that I was going to serve with or without the scholarship. I think that helps. She'll be fine. She has reason to be a little bit confident. Good luck!
 
Congratulations to your daDD! You should both be very proud. My DS was awarded an ISR this past fall and will be starting his journey next month. I've read several threads on this topic and it seems recruiting districts approach these ISRs one of two ways. One is that several candidates are recommended to the CO to interview and he/she selects the candidates he/she wants to award the ISRs to. The other is that by the time the candidate has been told they are being considered, the interview with the CO is basically a formality. My DS's was the latter. I accompanied him to his interview. The CO asked if I wanted to sit in on it. My DS said he was fine with me being in there so I jumped at the chance. I sat (very quietly) on a couch behind and off to the side. The interview was very low key; more of a get to know you thing and making sure my son would definitely use the scholarship. Right up front the CO told my son to relax, the scholarship was his. From what I have read the ISRs used to be awarded just based on test scores, but now that are often awarded to very desirable candidates who may not otherwise be awarded a scholarship. I suspect the latter may be the case for your DD, seeing as she is an LREC applicant and only 15% or so of the scholarships are awarded to non-tier 1 or 2 majors. If she is already studying Arabic abroad on a State Department scholarship, I'm sure she is an amazing candidate. I totally agree with @5Day. She should not stress too much, go in like she did to her initial officer interview and when she has this interview, she will have even more to talk about and offer to support her application.

As far as the second part of your question, if she does not get into the school where her scholarship is assigned she can request to have the scholarship transferred to another school, even if it was not on her initial top 5. Info on how to do this will be on her portal and in the documents that are mailed after the scholarship is officially awarded. A word on that, it could take a couple months. The board still has to review your DD's application and make the official award. My DS was told he got the scholarship in early September, but I don't think it was officially approved until the November board.

The program she is in is for high school students (there is another one for college students). Good info on the website for NSLI-Y: http://www.nsliforyouth.org/
There are summer and year-long programs
 
I recieved my ISR scholarship in January. The interview for me was very simple compared to the initial interview. The LT CDR had a basic interview to confirm the basic review of me. It seemed like he knew right away that I was fit and was just making small talk. The petty officer answered my questions prior to meeting the LT CDR. It was definitely one of the highlights of my life so far. I can tell your daughter is successful and she will do wonders. Tell her to be herself and all will workout.
