So I am currently waiting to hear back if I have been selected or not. I originally chose a tier 2 major partly out of interest, partly out of the higher selection chance. After a while, I realized that I actually wanted to do language and LREC much more and I would be much happier doing that so I emailed and asked to be considered for LREC. I did this because I figured it would be better for me to try and get a scholarship in what I really wanted to do rather than STEM simply because I have a better chance of being selected. Would you say this is a bad idea? I know my scholarship chances will more than likely drop, but I plan on joining as a college programmer if I do not get selected.

I'd say it's never a bad idea to seek what you really want. How happy would you be in college pursuing a major that does not interest you instead of what you really want to study? I believe you will be happier and, ultimately, more successful if you are studying what really interests you. You are aware that this will affect your chances of earning a scholarship at this time, but have a solid plan in place. Be the best college program midshipman you can be and go win that side load scholarship!

Thank you for the encouragement, and I haven't gotten denied yet so there may be some slim chance that I do get it. But what would you say my chances of picking up a side load as a tier 3 would be?

I really don't know that. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable than I will chime in on that. I do know the better your performance in the unit the better your chances.

Who did you speak to about adding yourself to the LREC pool? Once your package has been boarded, you're typically unable to change things like that. If it was before you were boarded, or if you conveyed that to the officer who interviewed you, that should typically work.

Saying that you're interested in LREC actually increases an individuals chances of receiving a scholarship. Last season, 66 offers for LREC were made among all NROTC Navy option scholarship offers (not including ISR, ASR, MSISR, Nurse, etc), and you can only be offered one if you indicated interest on your application. Choosing Tier 2 but also checking LREC isn't a bad strategy at all, assuming you're interested in the program.

I emailed NSTC and said I was interested in being considered for LREC and they said it was added to my package. They then asked for my major if I were to be selected for LREC and I told them I would be interested in doing Chinese, Spanish, or Arabic along with international affairs. The one thing I wasn't sure about is if I am still being considered for a scholarship for a tier 2 major or am I only being considered for tier 3/LREC now?

You could be awarded a scholarship for either. Depends what the board thinks.

Well I'm hoping LREC because although I wouldn't necessarily mind doing a tier 2 major, I think I would excel and do much better in LREC or just majoring in a language in general. Would I just have to do the tier 2 major if that's what I am selected for? I don't like the idea of being that guy that puts a tier 1 or tier 2 major then tries to switch to tier 3 after they get the scholarship.

Well, you can't control it now, so just wait and see. If you received a tier 2, that's what you'd have to do. You'd certainly be able to double major if you'd like. Who knows, maybe you'll be offered LREC instead. If you get tier 2 and would like to switch as a freshman, there's a brief process to request a change of tier.
