NROTC Marine Option Scholarship Notification

Got a call from my RS. I received a four year Marine option scholarship. I don't know what school it is to because I was so excited I forgot to ask. Thanks to everyone on this site; looking at you kinnem, Pima, and all the others. Y'all rock.

congratulations!!!

the selection rate was very low this year for 1st Board so quite the accomplishment!

if I may be so bold, what schools did you apply to in order?

again, kudos!

Got a call this morning from my OSO, picked up a 4-year scholarship, Marine Option. Socal.

This was my second time applying for the 4-year scholarship. It was the first time they allowed current college program MIDN 4/C to apply for the 4 year. My stats are nowhere near as high as many other applicants here. Only a 25 ACT, and 260 PFT, 3.3 high school GPA. But it can be done.

I always got discouraged on this forum when I saw somebody freaking out about having "only" a "3.86, 297 PFT, and a laundry list of extracurriculars."

So for you average students out there like me, don't give up, there is hope!

Congratulations on your scholarship! That's terrific. Now the hard part begins, but enjoy the rest of your senior year! And keep your nose clean.... (typed as a USMC commercial plays on TV). :thumb:

Congrats!!! What were your stats, if you don't mind?

Had 690/690 SAT, 29 Math 30 English ACT, 19/97/17:52 (292) PFT, three leadership positions in Scouts and Sports, 4.0 weighted at competitive Catholic HS (no ranking) with a boatload of APs and Honors, additional letters of recommendation in addition to those required. Yeah, I'm one of those kids who over-prepared, but since this was something I wanted, I wasn't going to ease up.

One thing I would recommend to all those on here is to run. I ran cross country throughout high school, so it comes easily to me, but running a 6:00 mile three times is not something easily attainable. There were so many kids who got 15-20 pullups, did 80-95 crunches, and then dropped a 20:30 or 21:00. I know some people are built different than others (I'm tall and thin), but running proved to be the insurmountable wall for most people.

Last but not least, be confident in yourself and your abilities. You've made it to your senior year; the only person who can hold you back is you.

Those are awesome scores and Stats. I agree 100% with everything you said. There is a big difference a 265 and a 292. Many fall into the 265ish range but the bar stars at 285. Keep up the hard work.

DS just notifed this evening that he was awarded NROTC scholarship, Marine Option!!! No info on school, but was told that packet will following in mail shortly:shake:

Has anyone's online status been updated yet? Or does it still say that it's at Board Selection?

Congratulations! Semper Fi!

Great to hear these awards trickling in. I have heard of a few others via my DS that may not be reported here in the forum.

Congrats to all those who have heard. To those who have not, keep the faith.

Hang in there.

kudos

we have not heard back on school choice either.

what schools did your DS list, if I may, in order?

Once school selections start to become known I wanted others, in the future, to be able to look back and assess how our selectees fared as re their 1st, 2nd ... choices from both boards

again, kudos!

He chose UT Austin, University of Michigan, and two in-state schools (NM) (in that order). This is his "Plan B", his goal is USNA - has 3 noms (4 with Presidential) and we believe he is 3Q'd and competitive. We were stunned to hear the good news last night, as it seemed like the notifications were made from the first MO NROTC board a couple weeks ago. We had resigned ourselves to waiting for the February board.

Congratulations to everyone who has received a scholarship so far. To those who have, what district and state are you guys from if you dont mind me asking. Also, does anyone know if you dont receive the scholarship on the first board, are you allowed to update your application before it roles over to the second one?

My son was able to update his between boards 3 years ago now. Of course, everything is always subject to change.

If you didn't get a scholarship, were you notified? I haven't been told anything yet.

I haven't heard anything either yet, and I was told by my friend who tried to get the scholarship last year, that if you dont get it in the first round, they move it to the second and your status stays saying "no decision has been made" until you are officially out of the running after the last board.

screen change

just checked NROTC website for status and the usual screen had been replaced with different look & content. it still does not say 'selected' even though we know DS has been chosen.

I believe this is precursor to school selections being announced officially in next few days from 1st Board.

if interested, I can post a 'matrix' of those who have chimed in on this thread and their stated school choices so those who follow can get a sense of which schools candidates are applying for and in what order. I have 10 from this thread - 6 of which have listed their school choice in order.

I suspect that aprox. 30 were chosen on the 1st board. (Very low) My supposition is that the Corps did not know what its final Manpower numbers were going to be last November so they went 'light' to err on conservative side.

I have no idea what the final # selected will be but I'd hazard a guess of 200 or so. purely an educated guess.

anyway, check your status on NROTC and see if your screens have changed. ours changed between 430 PM and 7PM today.

Yesterday I received an envelope in the mail with a red leather folder with a certificate from the Commandant, official acceptance letter, and about 20 other pages of paper work to fill out and send back. I got it about a week after my RS's XO told me I got the scholarship. I live in TX (8th Recruiting District) If it helps, school choices were:

1. Rice University
2. UCLA
3. Texas
4. USC
5. MIT

The letter specifically says "Your scholarship has been assigned to the NROTC unit at Rice University."

VMI82: My DS is NROTC Marine Option class of 2015 (He is Junior now). He told me there were approx 250 MO's at Mtn Warfare school this summer. I would guess that all told his class has about 265 allowing for some who couldn't make the training, injuries, etc. Assuming there was some attrition along the way, I would guess they may have selected 280 or so originally.

This is, of course, a shot in the dark but might provide some perspective.

Good guess on the portal changes. It is likely they are being updated and you should see something soon.
