The deadline for the NROTC Minority Serving Institution Scholarship Reservation (MSISR) is coming up next week. The MSISR scholarship is an equivalent scholarship to the Navy option 4-year National, paying 100% tuition and fees at any one of 20 HBCUs or High Hispanic Enrollment universities, leading to a commission upon graduation. Anyone who has submitted a Navy option 4-year National scholarship application is eligible; this opportunity is open to individuals of all races/ethnic backgrounds. You can apply for both scholarships concurrently, and you can also apply for MSISR even if you have already been identified as a non-select for the National.

To be considered, you must contact the unit affiliated with the Minority Serving Institution you wish to attend no later than 28 FEB 17. Expect to be asked for an emailed copy of your scholarship application PDF. Commanding Officers will interview all candidates during February and March, and those selected for the scholarship will be notified in late April.

For more info, and for a list of all the participating universities, see:

Lastly, if you have interest in or questions regarding the two New Orleans, LA HBCUs, Xavier University and Dillard University, please feel free to contact me.

Good Morning,

I am new to the board, but hopefully you can help me.

My son was denied for a National NROTC scholarship the beginining of last month however, he was interviewed for 2schools for the MSISR scholarship after he was already denied for the National Scholarship.

Since he was denied for the NROTC scholarship does that mean that he is automatically declined for the MSISR scholarship?

Is the MSISR scholarship graded on the same scale as the NROTC scholarship?

He was accepted into both schools and I had to send forth housing applications even though we don't know if he can attend based on scholarships?

How are candidates notified of the status of the MSISR scholarship?

Senior Year is almost up and I think I am more anxious him to make a decision on going to a school so I can prepare as a parent.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

The MSISR scholarship is a separate process. One can be declined for the National but awarded the MSISR.

"Graded" on the same scale? Do you mean are they scored the same way at the board? Yes and no. It ultimately comes down to the interview write up from the CO of the unit he's applying to. Each MSI has a certain number of MSISR scholarship slots per year. The CO more or less gets to rank all the applicants and the top folks will generally get the slots. For example, if there are three slots at school X, the top three applicants as ranked by the CO will normally get the scholarship.

Housing is on you. If you want to have multiple options, you may need to do that.

Applicants will be notified on NETFOCUS by the last week of April.

Thank you very much.

As of right now it states that he has not been selected but I will wait until last week of April and check again. I appreciate your assistance.
