Do the NROTC(in my case Marine Option) application statuses get updated regularly? And who updates them anyway?

Only when the status changes. The only status reported are:
At Recruiter level for Processing:
Application is not finished processing and may be missing some information

At NSTC level for Processing:
Application received by Naval Service Training Command and is being prepared for Board Review. Application is not finished processing and may be missing some information

Board Ready:
Application is complete and ready to go before a Selection Board

Pending Decision:
Application is being or has been reviewed by a Selection Board

And then with their final decision.

Currently mine says, "Your application is at the Marine Corps District(1st in my case) for Board review." It's probably been like that for 2.5-3 weeks now (Board was on Feb. 14th)

My navy app changed yesterday to "no decision has been made" I'm hoping there's some lag between status changes from that to an award and that I don't get reboarded.

If you don't get a Scholarship awarded to you, do they let you know or do they just never contact you again?
They let you know. My son was made aware via email in mid-April that he did not receive a scholarship. It was followed up a few days letter with a snail mail which also included information on other commissioning paths. It was still plenty of time to execute plan B which put him in his #1 out-of-state school as a college programmer. He had a scholarship which made it almost as inexpensive as an in-state school and he made up the difference in tuition with student loans. He won an NROTC MO side-load scholarship in Dec. of his sophomore year. Determination and hard work paid off.

Our son received an email from the MC recruiting command on his status last go around.

When I was awarded the scholarship I got a phone call from the officer who interviewed me telling me the good news.

This is my son's status. He sent everything so what does this mean?

Based on my experience when my son went through the application process several years ago -
1. NROTC MO is notoriously slow at updating portal status - if they do it at all.
2. My son did not get a negative reply until mid-April.
Keep working plan B. Hopefully it will include NROTC MO as a college programmer... that's how DS is serving as a 2nd Lt today in Okinawa.... with visits to Tokyo, Hong Kong and who knows where else before he leaves in 18 months. He loves his Marines and leading Marines is all he ever wanted to do. (Well, before NROTC he just wanted to BE a Marine).

I would have your son check with his recruiter right away. When did he apply? My son's recruiting station always had items sent in promptly. They have been wonderful. Now, he's anxiously waiting like everyone else.
