NROTC MO Results

Just got word yesterday that I received the MO scholarship, no word on school assignment yet. My stats:
3.4 GPA (UW)
School doesn't rank
ACT: 35 composite (35 English, 34 Math, 36 Reading, 36 Science)
Subject Tests: 730 Math Level 2, 720 on Molecular Biology
9 AP classes
2 Varsity letters, both Lacrosse
264 PFT (20 pullups, 94 crunches, 20:31 3 mile)
Leadership: Outreach worker with a teen suicide hotline, ran a project to work with a homeless shelter. One of four interns with a political campaign for the US House of Reps, got a letter of recommendation from said candidate for the NROTC board.
I applied as a Biology Major, beyond humbled and blessed to have been awarded the scholarship.

Now the HARD part begins. Keep in shape. Stay out of trouble. Enjoy the rest of your academic year!

Congratulations to all of you who were notified of your selection for the Marine Option scholarship. That is one big step in a long journey towards becoming a Marine Officer. Pretty soon you will be notified of the school selection where you need to earn acceptance or find a place to transfer your scholarship (there is an established process). You will need to officially "accept" your scholarship. You will be scheduled for a physical at DODMERB and have to deal with any issues. You will need to continue to do well in school and avoid any issues with the police. Don't take your foot off the accelerator - continue the path that has gotten you to this point. Oh, and get in better shape (no matter how good you are, you can be in better shape).

For those who haven't heard yet, hang in there. This process isn't over yet and there will be another board early in 2019.

(Kinnem you popped in right ahead of me. Great minds...)

Thank you very much kinnem and USMCGrunt, I will take your advice to heart and continue to improve myself so that I may continue to advance down this path.

An update: I have been assigned to my dream school, Texas A&M. I was also informed that I was the only recipient from the 12th Marine Corps District off the Early Board

I was told a couple days ago that I did NOT receive the Early Board scholarship, but I know that I still have a shot with the late board. I was wondering what anyone else thought my chances possibly were with this next board. I know that no one knows for sure what is important and what is not and that different people value different things, but I am totally new to all this stuff and just want a general idea. I'm not trying to brag or complain about not getting the scholarship but would just like some honest, helpful feedback. Here are my stats that I had for the first board:

-33 ACT
-Class rank 10/374
-Above 4.0 GPA, not sure but AP classes weighted
-6 AP classes
-238 PFT score (17 pull-ups, 88 crunches, 21:30 3-Mile time)
-Member in my church youth group all through high school
-130 service hours through church mission trips and Key Club
-4 years of 4-H, elected Secretary my senior year
-Experience showing goats through 4-H (Not sure if applicable but something)
-Member of Model United Nations 3 years (Not yet participated for the 4th year by application time)
-Member of Key Club 2 years
-Football 3 years, was currently in my 4th during the application
-Voted Scout Team MVP by my peers 2 years
-Tennis 3 years, earned my Varsity level Junior year
-Member of NHS
-Work history since Sophomore year in fast food
-Assigned responsibility to train and close parts of business
-Band 2 years

Here are some more things that I can now add to the application that I either forgot or didn't have before

-National Merit Scholarship Honorable Mentions
-Voted Scout Team MVP Senior year for 3 out of 4 years total
-All District All-Academic in Football
-Science Bowl Junior/Senior year, chosen by my peers to be Captain
-Finally earned my Varsity letter Senior year
-Earned an award Sophomore year for impressive character and work ethic on the tennis team
-Finished Calculus 3 from a college

From my perspective, I see myself lacking in the PFT and possibly Leadership. I know that I can boost my PFT score a lot more now because once Football was over I started training these things, and I was unprepared before. In terms of Leadership, I know that I have not held many positions, but have been recognized through awards and achievements. I think my Essays and interviews were good but I understand that my take on them could be totally different from someone else's. I talked a lot about leadership and adaptability in both, but know again that others see things differently. One question I have is if it would it be worth/appropriate to include AP test scores. But the most important questions I have are, like I said before, what are my chances on getting selected, and what can I improve on. I don't want to get my hopes up if there is one big, glaring issue that I am missing. Any input is greatly appreciated, and thank you for your time reading this post.

@goatmasters99: Your application is in and it will be seen by the regular board (no one here knows the date but assume February). If your OSO allows, the only thing you can do is retake the PFT and possibly update the extra curriculars. You have nothing "glaring" wrong with your application so don't second guess yourself. Worry about things you can control rather than those you can't. For instance, you can work on your physical fitness. You can seek leadership positions. You can continue to get good grades in your spring semester. You can begin to consider whether you might join NROTC at your college of choice and then reapply for the scholarship. And... you can figure out how to wait patiently while the process works itself out. (Waiting in the military is a way of life)

Good luck!

DD recieved email on 12/21 awarding her scholarship. School is TBD. No paperwork or portal update yet. Her 1st choice school doesn't release early admission results until mid January. We live in Ohio. Trying to give all the info I look for when seeking updates. Thanks to everyone who has shared info. This forum has been helpful!

@goatmasters99

USMCGrunt alluded to it, but don't put all your officer hopes in this one scholarship basket. Start making your contingency plans based on the "what if I don't get the scholarship" event.

Be ready to reapply for 4 year (You can do that as long as you don't have advance standing hours that push you over a freshman standing at a university)
Start planning on going to your 1st choice NROTC school as a college program midshipman. If you do well, you can earn a sideload scholarship (which is yet another path if the reapplying for the 4 year doesn't work out.)
If you don't think that NROTC is the way to go, look at PLC program.

Do NOT in frustration go to talk to the enlisted recruiter if you really want a commission.

Patience and perseverance pay off. My son didn't get early board during his senior year in high school. He didn't get the second board, either (paperwork issues by RS). He reapplied for the 4 year and received it on the early board during his 1st year of college.

He is now halfway through The Basic School.

Press on.

@rocatlin and @USMCGrunt Thank you both for your input and advice. I kind of see now that I am worrying about the things that I can't control and ignoring the things I can, which is pointless. I really do appreciate your guidance since I have been stressing over this for the last couple of weeks, and it has been unnecessary. I'll just keep working hard in school and fitness and see what happens. I didn't realize I could join a unit and apply again next year if I didn't get the scholarship. I'll also keep other options open and not bank on any one thing. Thanks again for your help.

My DS was awarded the NROTC scholarship to his first choice school. He is also interested in his second choice school, but we haven't had time or money to visit there yet. He's been accepted at both. Does anyone know if we take the time/money to go visit the second choice and he chooses that one, how difficult it may be to get it changed? and if they (NROTC) don't agree to change it for some reason, does he then lose his slot at the first choice?

There is a process. There are never any guarantees. I don't THINK they lose their slot but you may have to make two deposits until you hear on the transfer. Supposedly that is forbidden by some college association, but I've seen folks do it.

@MinnMom: I pulled out my DS' paperwork from seven years ago to check on the process. Things could have changed but...

When you receive your paperwork, there will be an information packet with the detailed procedures to request a school change. These requests are not always approved based on the load limit at the new school and other considerations. Request normally take 5-7 working days to process. If the school is full, you will be placed on the waiting list. Requesting a place on the wait list does not remove you from the school at which you were originally placed. Lots more details will be in the paperwork.
