DS was awarded a NROTC scholarship to VMI. If I understand correctly, the scholarship does not cover Room and Board, and VMI does not offer free Room and Board. Does anyone have first hand knowledge regarding this?

There is a full list of school and the benefits they give to NROTC scholarship receipients on the navy ROTC website. I found it to be a very good handy reference resource.

Sorry don’t have the link with me on phone.

Yes, I've reviewed that list as well. It's accurate at time of posting, but is subject to change. Hoping someone with first hand knowledge can clarify.

First, congratulations on the NROTC scholarship. This is a great achievement.

My DS is a 1st at VMI and is out of state. He is on ROTC scholarship and I can confirm that VMI does not cover R&B for ROTC scholarship recipients. Also, if financial aid was offered prior to the scholarship, it will likely be rescinded or reduced.

Congratulations to your DS for considering VMI. It is a tough, but potentially very rewarding path. Post any VMI questions you may have as there are a number of active members on this board with recent graduates or current cadets at VMI who will give honest and helpful responses. Also feel free to PM me with any questions you are not comfortable posting publicly.

I have a 2nd at VMI on AROTC scholarship and confirming comments by Dadof2. Financial aid through FAFSA will cover the remaining costs.

VMI's bursar would know. He or she is a phone call away.

FAFSA Results will vary depending on every family’s situation. However, VMI definitely assists those cadets who have a need. “Percentage Of Need Met” for VMI is typically at or near 100% each year.

my son graduated VMI in May. He was on an Army ROTC Scholarship. As Dadof2 said above it doesn't cover room and board and VMI does not provide free room and board to scholarship cadets.

happy to answer any VMI questions. It's an amazing school.

This is correct, my DS was awarded NROTC Scholarship for VMI. Prior to the award showing up on his portal he was awarded a local VMI scholarship that would have covered R&B however when the NRTOC was applied the Local VMI scholarship was rescinded. They stated the NRTOC fund was covering the need based which the local scholarship was supposed to. Now he has to attend NSI at Great Lakes in July (hopefully)

We also received the same email today of the Local VMI Scholarship being rescinded.
