Hello,
Does anyone know if NSI is now 3 weeks instead of 4 weeks?
The NROTC Facebook page is posting updates on Cycle 1 and they wrote “NSI is a three week indoctrination program..” .

Just wondering if the program shortened to 3 weeks. Has there been a change?

It's simple - NSI itself is a 3 week start-to-finish program, as it was 2 years ago. However, with the pandemic, there is now an isolation period that extends the start to end of the program, in which some online instruction is reportedly included during that window. So depart to return home is longer this year for this reason and you can think of it whichever way you wish - including or not including the extension. Don't overthink this one please.

DS just got an email about NSI 2. Only two MIDN are going to NSI Phase II. All other MIDN are waived from NSI this summer.
My DS is very disappointed now : (

Sounds like 2020 again..LOL Last year ROTC training was very sparce, lots of "virtual" stuff. The individual schools did their own summer training, including NSI when school started.

Hi Navyteddy, could you please explain a bit more? Is this specific to your DS ROTC unit? Or all of NSI Phase II? My DD is scheduled to attend NSI Phase II and has not heard this news. Thank you.

My DS got an email today from his unit saying he is "waitlisted" for NSI Session 2. Until that's finalized, no way to tell when DS needs to show up at school, as I expect individual units would have to do some kind of orientation prior to freshman orientation.

This is what he received today

Well they wouldn't do NSI with just 2 participants, so this must apply to his unit. Is your son on scholarship‽ Perhaps they're waiving college programmers? Will your son be attending an SMC?
It is 2 participants from his unit. My son is on 4 year scholarship. So is his roommate, who is also waived from attending this year.

That makes a certain amount of sense. I imagine they are exempting college programmers, probably due to Space. He'll get the same value from NSI as he would have. Tell him to focus and have fun.

Yes, he was told it was because of space. Disappointing he won’t be able to attend but there’s nothing we can do. :)

what is a "college programmer"?

The letter says "bag cant be bigger than a backpack". Does anybody know if that means they can bring a small roll bag and a backpack. That seems like a lot of stuff to just take a backpack.

Maybe a ruck backpack. My son is a senior mid and he hauls 50 pounds in that on a regular basis, especially lately on cruise. It is set up to accommodate gear-not really a school backpack.

OP, only guidance would be, in general, to find a way to follow specific orders. If instructions say come with a small backpack, then do so. As you or your DD/ DS will soon learn sticking out for not following the guidelines is not your goal. Small is open to interpretation so that helps, but... At NSI each participant will be issued a sea bag for the volume of items they will receive while there (uniforms, clothing, shoes et al. which they will use to return home. Toiletries will be purchased there, not brought with them. Good luck.
