NROTC Nurse Scholarship Offered...questions

DS applied for the NROTC scholarship as a senior in high school and was not awarded. He joined his university's NROTC unit as a college programmer 2018-2019, worked hard and was awarded on Friday--specifically the Navy Nurse NRTOC Scholarship.

The question here is this...he was told by his unit that he and other members of his unit would be going to New Student Indoc at Great Lakes--even before getting the scholarship.

1. Is this usual to send students who've already completed a year of college/NROTC to NSI?
2. What are the differences for Navy Nurse scholarship recipients regarding summer cruise?
3. Would he be also doing a summer cruise (or whatever navy nurse recipients do) this summer?

He is in the thick of the last few weeks of freshman year--other than the obligatory texts--he's just too busy to discuss all this with me--if he even knows at all.

I don't think anyone can say if this is "usual" since this will only be the second year of NSI and last year was only a limited number of schools that went to NSI. That said, I would be surprised if a rising 3/c were sent to participate in NSI, scholarship or not. I know nursing majors have different summer cruises than other midshipmen, so it is possible that your DS could be assigned some sort of medical responsibilities at NSI for his summer cruise. Getting hte information from our kids is often difficult; they are busy and have different mindsets and priorities than us. Also, they often receive the information on very short notice. My DS requested the first session of sea trials this summer, which starts May 4. He still has not received confirmation of his dates. Just be confident that the Navy knows what it is doing and your DS will end up where he needs to be and get the training he needs. It will be hard making summer plans, because they won't know their schedules until last minute, but it seems that is all part of the military experience.

Best of luck and congratulations to your DS on his Nursing scholarship. Not very many of those are given out, so he must have impressed.

#1 congrats

My thought is since he's doing the specific Nurse option CORTIMID is somewhat irrelevant or at this point there are no slots in CORTIMID remaining and there is room in Indoc?

Well, he can't do a normal summer cruise unless he's contracted. NSI sounds like a good opportunity for a cruise for someone who isn't contracted. There will be a lot taught there that he already knows (customs, courtesies, rank etc) but also a lot of opportunity to learn things he doesn't know. I know fire drills are on that list and I'm sure there are others. Besides, he'll be able to stand out as a leader and great team member given what training he has already had. That can't hurt.

I'm assuming he won't contract until the autumn. If he is contracting now it might simply be what's available on relatively short notice... but your guess is as good as mine.

surely you're not saying the military in general and navy in particular moves in mysterious ways ....
