My son had his NROTC physical fitness test administered by his XC coach over the weekend; he is applying for a 4 year Navy option scholarship. There is always room for improvement, but am wondering if he should just go with these results:
  • Crunches 74
  • Push Ups 62
  • 1 mi Run. 5:58

Thoughts? Any recent scholarship awardees have any insight?

For NROTC grades/test scores are by far the biggest factor. Those numbers are pretty good, I think he could probably max the push-ups and sit-ups based off of his mile time. If this was his first time taking the test, I definitely would recommend he take it again. If this was months of work, practice tests, and his best possible score, it's okay to be happy.

For the pushups, I recommend a website called hundredpushups. They have pretty good training plans, I know a few people who can now max their PRT pushups by using those workouts. For sit-ups, I honestly don't recommend doing them at all, other than on the test. That kind of movement is terrible on your lower back. Instead I just do planks, flutter kicks, deadlifts, squats, (if he doesn't have experience lifting, those last two aren't necessary) etc. For reference, I got 125 crunches on my last PRT.
