NROTC PRB for PT

Hey everyone, I’m looking for some assurance and guidance.

So I’m a 1st semester Sophomore scholarship midshipman and we just had our final PRT and I got a good overall but got a SAT on the run. Now, this is my second or third time getting a SAT on the run for the final but I’ve gotten a good overall every final.

My Gunny just informed me that he was going to notify the CO and that I was going to get a PRB for this and I’m FREAKING OUT. Can they give me a PRB for getting a SAT on the run? I was under the impression that unless I failed a portion of the test, I was okay.

Also, it’s a little ridiculous because I turn 20 over winter break and so with the same score I have now, I’d have a GOOD on the run next semester without changing a thing. I don’t know exactly how to go about this or defend myself. Any experience with any of this?

Hummmmmm! Are you a Marine option on NROTC? Whatever the case big deep breath. You don’t want to go to a PRB; however, start running on your own to get out of the limelight of “SAT”. Bottom line improve your run time. I would be shocked if the PRB goes any further than what I just said providing “all other expectations” of the scholarship are in order.

My son has told me about some really off the wall PRB’s that ended with a slap on the wrist. Understand this even if it is a slap your not in Kansas any more.

The military / unit/ nation / family / friends and the list goes on expects something more extraordinary out of you. It’s no longer about you; time to step up. If your going to be an officer in the military; the people you will lead will depend on you for being at the top of your game.

You might not like running but it’s time to embrace it, love it, live it and run like you never ran before; show “all” you have this and meet and beat the challenge ahead of you. Good luck.

I'm a Navy Option.
And you're absolutely right. People are counting on me. I do have to put more time in for running; it just really sucks cuz when I do run on my own or when we have PT at the Unit, I kill it. But I've always done poorly on test days and it's just nerves.
My LT told me not to worry really; he said he thought I was an awesome midshipman and thinks I'd make a great officer, so he'd recommend to retain me. But this whole situation still kinda sucks. I have a lot of integrity and my character is above reproach, anyone would vouch for me. Just gotta adapt and overcome I suppose.
Thank you for the reply.

Ahhhh, as a coach of 20 years I often see this. I talk to the kids about "WALLS". Picture if you will on your run the biggest wall you can think of. Do you go around the wall, over the wall or through the wall. The "WALL" is in your head if your killing the run on your own then kill it test time. You can and will do this you just need to reach down inside your self and not allow your mind to beat your body. When you feel like your falling behind reach down inside and be better than what's expected, refuse to allow your own mind to beat you. Remain positive!
The LT sees something so go for it!

Does your unit have a guide book? Consult it.
For my DS unit, the standard is Midshipman will strive to attain at least a “GoodLow” or higher on all PRT events. Those below this standard will be assigned to the Unit’s remedial PT program.
also
All Midshipmen must achieve a “Good-Low” or better to meet unit PRT standards. Any Midshipman below this standard will be placed on the remedial PT program.

For a PRB to be convened, here are 2 categories that could apply

(3) Any physical deficiency, requiring a PRB for disenrollment, defined as three failures in a four-year period to pass the PRT, third class swim, or meet height/weight requirements.
(4) Other performance deficiencies as determined by the Commanding Officer (PNS).

For my DS unit a PRB could be convened, but most likely it would be just a remedial PT program.

At the PRB don't use the excuse that "when I turn 20 I will pass". Have a plan in place to improve your run and explain that to the PRB.

Good luck.

5Day is spot on. I think the Gunny wants to see mandatory remedial PT training. I would recommend you voluntary join now. If your unit doesn't have it, then join the Marines PT program. If they don't have that, ask your chain of command for extra PT training.

A couple of general observations:
1) Freaking out doesn't look good on a Naval officer
2) Excuses don't look good on a Naval officer either
3) Gunnys know best

In all seriousness, though, I know it can be "scary" to not live up to expectations and standards. Own the situation, however. "Good enough" is really never good enough. Strive for excellence. The Naval service needs excellence.
