DS received NROTC full scholarship and also an appointment to USNA. As IDay for USNA is 6/30 and NROTC arrival at University sounds like it is late August can you keep your NROTC scholarship up to IDay as an emergency plan B?

Just curious for his options.

Congrats on him being awardeded both an USNA appointment and an NROTC scholarship. I wonder if holding on to and then dropping the NROTC scholarship past the last 18-22APR board takes away an opportunity for someone else.

For the NROTC scholarship, there will be a separate report date for the New Student Indoctrination (NSI) training for new scholarship recipients that differs from the Fall semester start of school. NSI is located in Great Lakes, IL and can be thought of as Plebe summer for NROTC mids.

Each unit may also hold a short NSO (New Student Orientation) that is different from NSI. These are usually a few days right before classes start, and will just be the new 4/C mids coming into that specific program with the school.

As for whether to hold on until I-Day to let go of the scholarship? That is a bit of a pickle. If your son is concerned that he might get injured and be unable to report to the USNA, remember that it is the same DoDMERB group that regulates the medical clearance for both. If there is something that happens to cause him to be unable to report for Plebe summer at the Academy, it might also be something that will not allow him to report to NSI and keep the scholarship.

I believe there are some threads on the forum about what to do when a candidate has multiple options. Try the search function and see what comes up??

Yes, he can hold on to that NROTC scholarship until he reports for I-Day and there are some good reasons to do so. He could sustain an injury or illness that would prevent him from reporting to I-Day, but be healed in time for NROTC, if he is not already cleared by DODMERB and ends up needing a waiver, he could be denied a waiver from USNA, but receive one from NROTC. He earned that scholarship and it is his to hold on to. Giving it up now does not necessarily mean it would be awarded to someone else. USNA and NROTC each offer more appointments and scholarships than they expect to actually yield. They know a certain percentage of applicants will decide to pursue other opportunities.

I also think that someone isn't considered fully on scholarship until they complete NSI. Our resident PNS will correct me if I'm wrong on that one!

Cool Thanks!

Thanks! Good thoughts.

No, you are not considered on scholarship until you fill out the paperwork (contract). My DS did NSI and started his unit but his waiver did not come through until January.
Thanks! I read letter and it sounded like you can get waiver later and be reimbursed for that semester once granted. Pretty good deal.

My son is waiting on his waiver for his scholarship. He submitted everything they requested a week or so ago. Already had it for USNA (same one carried over from last year's application since there was nothing new to report). Different orgs, so different reviews.
