The Navy ROTC web page states that the scholarship applicant should apply for a scholarship at a "First Choice" school and up to five schools in total. So, if the applicant gets a Navy Scholarship but does not get accepted as a student at the first choice school, but gets selected at one or more of the other choices, what happens? I guess I don't understand the timing of when the NROTC scholarship is awarded versus when the student will hear what schools he has been accepted to? There would seem to be three components: 1. Will the Navy award the scholarship, 2. will the school accept the student, and 3. is there room in the NROTC unit at the school for the student. How do all three get coordinated? What if the 1st choice is a "reach" school (which may apply to my DS, because our State U is VERY competitive because in-state tuition is so affordable) and the applicant does not get in to First Choice? Is it difficult to get the scholarship transferred to 2nd choice or 3rd choice, etc.

That happened to my DS. He wasn’t accepted at Berkeley, so he had it transferred to Boston College. It was an easy process. The only dependency is if the unit at the 2nd school has an open slot.

That's what I am wondering about. How often does it happen that there isn't an open slot? If the student has been accepted to the school and the Navy is paying via scholarship, I would think there is always room for one more in the unit? (except is rare instances.) But how common is it that there isn't room at #2 or #3?

The most recent word I saw on this forum is that the Navy removed the caps on how many scholarship freshman could join each unit each year, so you should be able to transfer into any unit if you are not accepted into your first choice school. And the unit you transfer to does not have to be one of the five that you listed on your application.

Last year My DS was waitlisted on his #1 choice on the scholarship. He had also applied to the USNA, and was laser focused there, so his Plan B (NROTC Scholarship) was almost an afterthought. He was accepted at his #2-5 schools. After not receiving the USNA appointment, he requested a transfer from his #1 to #2 (via a simple request letter to Pensacola) which was granted. He spent that first year at Texas A&M as a Navy Contract (that's what they call the NROTC Scholarship), and re-applied to USNA. He' now at Plebe Summer loving life (typed in sarcasm font).

This is the correct answer.

In my sons unit, which comprises 5 schools, he says most are on scholarship.,

Congrats!!! Great story. I probably saw your DS marching in formation last week!

So, a candidate can apply to more than the 5 schools listed through the scholarship app. assuming those schools have NROTC? My DS is working on his MO ROTC scholarship this summer and I want to be certain he approaches it correctly.

He can apply to as many colleges as he would like. I would list his top 5 preferences on the application, but if wants to apply to additional schools he can. I wouldn't as 5 seems like enough if I included a stretch school, some likely schools, and a safety school, but have at it.

Thank you!

Thanks so much. I'm sure you did see him if you were there during formation. He's in H-15.
