I'm awaiting my NROTC scholarship decision, status "No decision has been made on your application." I've already been accepted to all my schools for mechanical engineering. Still waiting on my application decision for the USNA and USMMA (Hold Status).

My goal is to go Active Duty Navy and my question relates to my plan B College Option. If I understand correctly, I can reapply for an NROTC scholarship as a college freshman 2nd semester or in my sophomore year, 3 year scholarship. When reapplying as a college student does the NROTC still look at SAT/ACT scores or as a college student just your college grades? I currently have an ACT Math=29, English=30 SAT equivalent 1370. I'm trying to determine if I should take the ACT's again to strengthen my application if I don't receive an NROTC scholarship this year as a high school senior.

Any advice greatly appreciated

You can reapply for the 4-year National as a brand new College Program freshman in NROTC. I'd recommend submitting in October of your freshman semester. The National is almost entirely based on high school record, including SAT/ACT, so they have a big impact. I routinely (strongly) encourage our College Program freshmen to retake the SAT/ACT in the early fall of freshman year if their ACT is below the recent board average (if they're below about a 30 on Math and English, I'll push for a retake). If you're looking to reapply for the National that's due 31 JAN 18, they will accept any SAT/ACT scores taken between 1 JAN 16 and 31 DEC 17. Taking the test again before freshman year or during the fall of freshman year can't hurt. I've seen increased SAT/ACT scores make the difference between a student getting declined one year and then selected the next.

If you fail to earn the National again during freshman year, you'll start applying (in late spring freshman year) for the 3-year and 2-year Side Loads. Those applications do not look at standardized test scores or high school record.

In your case, only good things can come from sitting for the SAT/ACT another time or two, because reapplying for the National is the first opportunity that you'll see as a College Programmer.

When submitting your ACT scores to NROTC they convert them to an SAT equivalent. I'm going to focus my ACT studying on Math but does NROTC look at just English or a combination of English and Reading. Trying to determine a primary focus on either English or Reading.

Thank you for the advice

Also, if you are not a scholarship recipient in the next 3 boards. You should start working on the national NROTC application over the summer, but don't complete it until after you join your Battalion in the fall. This way you can complete some of the work before you get loaded up with school and NROTC in the fall.
