Nrotc results

@sallye and @HopefulMidMom D'oh. Multi-tasking and didn't see this was asked to someone else - I'll leave the answer though in case it helps. My understanding from reading other posts on this forum, is that generally the MO board meets approximately around late November - early December. then again near March. I think those are the two main MO boards. Others, please update if you have more accurate information. Again after some processing days, then decisions are released. Same rule applies - you are still in consideration, until you are notified one way or the other that you aren't.

@HopefulMidMom Do you know about MO boards and how many there are?

I will take answers from anyone!

I will differ slightly from @Herman_Snerd and say this is pretty early for results. These are this first board results I've heard of for this year. Of course not all applicants visit this forum. The first board seems to award relatively few scholarships and most seem to be extremely well qualified applicants who, of course, got their applications in early. It seems like the boards in December-March award more scholarships each board, then the remaining ones in April. Just my observations from years past.

And I beleive @Herman_Snerd is correct about the Marine boards. There are two, with the first being around November. I believe those boards are held and announced by region, so results seem to be a bit more scattered and spread out.

DS received NROTC scholarship for UCLA last night. Shocked how early that notification came! He got a phone call a few weeks ago because they never received the "official"/ sealed transcript from his high school online ordering system (thanks Parchment.com  ). The school registrar was kind enough email the Navy gentleman directly and three weeks later DS got notification of award. Still hoping for SA appointment, but we have a few months to accept/decline the scholarship.

My recollection is that in the last 2 years I did hear of a few NROTC national scholarship winners in this same time of year. Some of these may be from the per-region ISR processes as OPs noted above. I think we agree that it's rare. I was just pointing out that I do recall seeing the "woohoo" notes come out - maybe via email if not this forum. around this time.

But then again for full transparency:
1. I thought Lynyrd Skynyrd was a dude - the lead singer of that band.
2. I thought the 12/31/1999 was going to be the party night of our lives. I was convinced there would be a mass champagne shortage at the turn of the millenium because of all of the partying that would be happening, and considered investing in it in 1997 to sell at a premium in December 1999 (who knew Y2K would mean most folks just stayed home - what a dud that was). Fortunately the friends I tried to rally to join me and organize advised me that was just idiocy, correctly.
3. I also thought at age 16 when I really should have known better, that electricity was a resource we harvested like crops from the ground - that we had to find it and capture it to use it.
So based on this track record, folks please weigh favorably toward any opposing view of mine:)

No need to wait on accepting the scholarship. Accepting it is not binding. You can accept now and still later accept an SA appointment with a clear conscience if one is offered. And I believe you have 30 days to accept the scholarship, if memory serves me correctly. The info will be in the email, on the acceptance portal or in the official packet your DS will receive in the next 10 days or so.

I agree, in years past I've seen awards around this time of year. I just meant that these are the few early awards. I guess it was just the way each of us interpreted the question.

DS just happily accepted his! He was a little concerned about accepting since he hasn't been admitted to his first choice school and wasn't sure if he should wait, but when he back over the material he can't transfer it (if needed) until he's accepted the scholarship. What an amazing opportunity.

Maybe a dumb question, but should my DS accept his NROTC and AFROTC scholarship just because we don’t know exactly what will happen in the coming months? Leave all the options open?

It depends. Well, you asked, so let's break it down. I'm not going to hold back on my opinion.

ACCEPTABLE: The AROTC scholarship comes with a hard deadline. It is non-binding. If you need to accept it while waiting for an AFROTC / SA/ or university decision, do so and then decline later. There may not be AROTC/ NROTC branches at every campus, and you may not know where he ultimately will get in, so that's acceptable until you have all the data you need.
When does the Navy scholarship have to be accepted- is it the Spring? If so then recommend making a choice and only accepting it when you have your decision made, as soon as possible, and giving one scholarship back.
Additional detail: The Air force scholarship does not need to be accepted until the Spring. *Not in focus here, just for reference.
So decline as soon as you can, keep the decision open for those you need more time on, but don't accept two scholarships at once is my recommendation.
Otherwise, it seems to me selfish/ gluttonous to accept two ROTC scholarships at once. It's bad juju/ karma. I think it's not treating these good organizations the way you would want to be treated. If I were Army ROTC leadership, (I am not) and am deciding who to offer more than 200 million dollars in scholarships to among a couple thousand people , and I found out one of the people I extended an offer to accepted my offer AND the Navy offer concurrently, I would rescind your offer immediately because you're not displaying the very behaviors that made you such an attractive candidate. It's jerking people around. Even if you can get away with it, why?

If you have the details you need, then pick one, turn the other down. Don't be the (nasty word removed that rhymes with bass-foal) who at the supermarket this time of year takes the 2 remaining turkeys into their cart, strolls through 10 aisles (non-refrigerated) before picking one and then putting the now luke-warm one they don't want back. Don't be a turd.

One other appeal, give it back so that the branch you're declining has more time to pick the best candidates. ultimately these young women and men will be leading in the same theater of combat as your child, potentially. Don't you want the best people standing shoulder to shoulder with him and my DS when they are in the soup?

This comes up every year and there is a popular "take all the time you need" recommendation. I agree, but don't dilly-dally and play games, either. And don't end up with your offer rescinded because you are acting like a _____. Let the ultimate choice be yours. Good luck.

Thank you for the total honest opinion! I totally agree with you. This is our first time doing all this, and I just didn’t want to make a wrong choice without more wisdom from those who have been there.

My DS accepted both AROTC and AFROTC scholarships and when he accepted USAFA, he wrote emails to decline the ROTC scholarship offers. He even wrote emails to the local ROTC's to thank them for their support.

@Adopt3 - Congrats to your DS and accept both scholarships.

To clear up any guilt that you might have about denying a scholarship to someone else.....the process doesn't work that way. If you decline the NROTC scholarship, it does NOT go back into the pot to be handed out to another applicant this year. It was awarded to your DS and will only be used (or not used) by him. The number of scholarships awarded is greater than the number of accessions we need for a simple reason - brilliant applicants will receive multiple offers (ROTC, SAs) and over time have figured out what out typical acceptance (of scholarship) rate looks like.

I'm happy to speak on behalf of the USN in saying that if your son chooses AFROTC, we're not angry but would simply like to know what we could have done better to attract him to the Navy.

You are in a great position. Best of luck to your DS.

@HopefulMidMom Do you know about MO boards and how many there are?
@Herman_Snerd was essentially correct with the exception that there are only 2 board PERIOD. The MO boards are composed of Marine officers as they aren't going to let any Navy officers pick their men and women. Of course Navy feels the same way, so Navy and Marine options go before different boards altogether. So do Nursing Options for that matter. They go before a board composed of <gasp> nurses.

I would say accept any and all offers, unless you know for sure you will not be using it. A lot can happen or change before now and the beginning of college. Decisions about which branch best suits an applicant can shift. Each branch has their own DODMERB standards and something that is an issue for one branch may be acceptable to another. Which colleges accept the applicant can come into play. And, even if that SA offer comes along, still accept the ROTC scholarship. What if there is an injury that keeps you from reporting for the SA summer program, but would be healed by the fall when reporting to the ROTC. My point is, it's not being selfish (unless you absolutely know you won't use it). It's covering your bases. As pointed out above, if you decline a scholarship, it doesn't go back in the pool for someone else, at least not for NROTC. Just like colleges accept more applicants than they expect to attend, ROTC offers more scholarships than they expect to have used.

It seems like an unusually large number of winners for this first board compared to previous years. It makes me wonder if NROTC is doing things a little bit differently this year..........
