NROTC Scholarship and Reapplication to USNA

Hello, I have a question regarding the reapplication process to USNA and the acceptance of an NROTC scholarship. I am currently applying to the Naval Academy for the class of 2024. If I don't get an appointment, my plan B is to apply for a 4-year NROTC scholarship and reapply to the Naval Academy. Is it possible to accept the NROTC scholarship, spend my freshman year of college doing NROTC (and reapplying to the Naval Academy), and hopefully accept an appointment to USNA? I figured that if I get rejected twice, I would consider just finish the rest of my three years at college and commission through NROTC. I'm just not sure if the NROTC scholarship is binding, and at what point. Thanks!

If you are fortunate enough to get a 4 yr ROTC scholarship it is binding (in terms of service commitment) after your freshman year. If you drop before starting your sophomore year you will have no commitment. Once you start your sophomore year you would owe all the way back to your freshman year if you dropped. My information is a little dated, so check on this for yourself if you get the NROTC scholarship to be sure you understand how it works.

Just to be clear: if you want to apply for the 4-year NROTC scholarship you should be getting your application together now -- i.e., in tandem with your USNA application.

I wasn't sure from your post whether you were going to apply to NROTC only upon receiving rejection from USNA (which would be too late for a 4-year scholarship).

NROTC Scholarship is binding after your first year, hence the saying "one and done".

While this is correct with respect to simply dropping NROTC, it DOES NOT APPLY to leaving NROTC for an appointment to USNA. There will be no payback obligation if one switches from NROTC to USNA.

So if I understand correctly, even if I decided to go from NROTC to USNA my senior year of college, I still wouldn’t owe anything back?

You also have to meet the age requirements...as in maximum age. Pay attention to that requirement.

Ditto what was said above, to apply concurrently with USNA if you are talking about NROTC ‘24. IOW, there may not be enough time to apply for NROTC scholarship, entering as a freshman, if you wait until finding out from USNA. The first NROTC boards begins soon! DS just checked his NROTC status, and it says that applications will be looked at from the end of August. So now.

+1 to ProudDad17. I would add an additional 5 years after commissioning. There comes a point where it no longer makes sense to attempt to commission via USNA. If you were to go to USNA in what would be your senior year, I could imagine folks asking you why you would do that when you can commission within a year anyway.

Considering fellow Mids who wanted/want no business with the Academy will ask you why when you reapply as a Freshman, you can infer that the reactions from others will get more bewildered over time.

Thanks for helping me understand. I would definitely not go to USNA in my senior year of college, I would probably go in my sophomore year at latest

Good plan to try for USNA as plan A and NROTC as plan B. Both are very competitive, so you should also consider a school that you can afford without a scholarship that has NROTC and join as a college programmer. This demonstrates your continued desire to be on a path to commissioning which could be helpful in a 2nd try to USNA and a try for a 3 yr or 2 yr NROTC scholarship. If still unsuccessful you can go for advanced standing and commission that way. Keep all options open for as long as you can. Good luck

Dadof2...+1
Right on. DS just witnessed or experienced reapps for USNA and college programmers receiving scholarships in his NROTC unit this year. Lots of successes for the programmers (non-scholarship freshmen in his class) who stuck with it.

Good luck to you on your journey!
