NROTC Scholarship Awarded

Congrats! Your the first one I’ve seen! Go ahead and make a thread!!

Congratulations. I don't actually start sitting on boards for a couple months, so I wasn't able to send out my usual advanced warning. But it's good to see the results came out quickly after the board concluded.

Congratulations!! Can you share how you found out? Email, Phone call, NETFOCUS? Also general credentials? Tier GPA Leadership? Jus curious since you are the first!

Of course! I received an email at about 1 pm today notifying me. My portal had changed to indicate the award I assume around the same time, though I did not get a specific notification about that.

As far as general credentials go, I am a multi-sport varsity athlete, heavily involved in my community, National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist, and have a 1510 SAT. I got the scholarship for a Tier 3 major, and my GPA is 4.51 weighted. I have a significant leadership position in my high school's NJROTC unit, am the captain of my club swim team and high school swim team, and represent several thousand U18 swimmers in our local governance.

They can be spaced out a little but they almost always go out the same day.
Based on your previous postings and I what I understand about the process, once the package has been through the board, does the status change on NETFOCUS to indicate anything other than "No decision has been made on your application."

My son’s application was submitted early October and his status has only said “received and being processed” since then. Will the status change if his package has been reviewed at all? Or, will it continue to say received and is being processed until he is either awarded or denied?

We submitted my sons application in early September and it said "received and being processed" for a couple weeks before changing to "No decision has been made on your application".

You asked the question better than I did. My question is the same as yours though. Will the status change after his package has been reviewed by the board? Or, will it continue to say "No decision has been made on your application" until he is either awarded or denied?

It will likely stay as "No decision has been made on your application" And to manage expectations, it could be that way into next year when the vast majority of applications come in during January and February.

It should shift to no decision has been made if it has been reviewed by a board and is waiting for follow on boards. That usually means it is sitting on an alternate list.

Our son was awarded a 4-year NROTC scholarship, Tier 3 major yesterday as well. To say that it was a good day in our house yesterday is an understatement! It has been quite a ride.

We have turned to this forum quite a bit over the past few months for guidance and general knowledge. I wanted to share a bit of his story to, hopefully, give future applicants some hope and to let them know that anything is possible. As we have read many times on this forum...make them tell you no. Not applying should not be an option.

His background: SAT 1190, ACT 24 (strong English score, 30). He submitted both SAT and ACT. Weighted GPA 4.2. 4 AP classes, rest honors. Member of Sea Cadets for the past 6 years, currently Chief Petty Officer and LPO of his division. Battalion Commander at his school. Class president for the past 3 years. Editor-in-Chief for the school newspaper. 160+ volunteer hours. JV and Varsity soccer. AFA results: 6:30 mile, 56 push-ups, 3:25 plank. Interview went really well.

We were worried because his SAT/ACT scores were not as competitive as you read on this forum and because he chose a Tier 3 major (not as many of these are handed out).

All of this to say that anything is possible. Work hard, put in the best possible application you can put in, get in shape and choose a major that you will be able to live with for four years (our son struggled with this but after reading many posts on here he decided to stick with his gut).

Go NAVY!!

Great post. Congrats! I feel like readers here may sometimes feel they cannot compete, bc they may be ‘missing’ a piece…perhaps not the highest score in one testing area, for example (my youngest’s sons case, still received a scholarship 1st board). Lots of amazing resumes here on the forums!

APPLY!! Each person is looked at individually. And you may have the ‘it factor’. It’s the whole person, including interview.

Congrats again. It’s a great feeling!!

Your feedback is invaluable to the forums here for those still completing their applications. In particular, you bear out one inalienable truth......the application process looks at the "whole person" instead of one or two key indicators. SAT scores would not have been in the highest category for the first board, but the involvement in Sea Cadets, including leadership roles, a leadership role on the school newspaper, volunteer hours, etc........and successful interviews......the SAT fades in its relevance, and a Tier 3 major doesn't become an issue.

I've mentioned in other threads, but if you combine the officer interview and the teacher/counselor evaluations, those interviews and evaluations comprise 60% of the total score.

Congrats on the good news!

ok thank you. So it sounds like maybe not all applications received by board date are reviewed? Our recruiter says it was sent last part of Sept/early part of October. Hoping he'll get looked at in November 🙏

When you mention the application was sent, do you know if that included the officer interview and the teacher evaluations? Sometimes the application is on hold waiting for those to come in.

The recruiter says the packet was complete when sent. I wish there was a way we could check on our end to make sure everything was completed as promised. This was our recruiters first time submitting apps so a learning curve was in place.

Hmmm, does your son recall doing an interview with an officer? Those used to be done on paper and submitted with the application. But they are now done digitally and the officer conducting the interview submits them directly to NSTC. I am sure it will work out, but if he recalls doing the interview, then it should be up for the next board.

Yes for sure he did the interview. I don't understand how his packet wasn't reviewed. I'll have my son follow up with his recruiter next week. He's focused on finishing up college apps this week for early action schools.
