Our son was awarded a 4-year NROTC scholarship, Tier 3 major yesterday as well. To say that it was a good day in our house yesterday is an understatement! It has been quite a ride.
We have turned to this forum quite a bit over the past few months for guidance and general knowledge. I wanted to share a bit of his story to, hopefully, give future applicants some hope and to let them know that anything is possible. As we have read many times on this forum...make them tell you no. Not applying should not be an option.
His background: SAT 1190, ACT 24 (strong English score, 30). He submitted both SAT and ACT. Weighted GPA 4.2. 4 AP classes, rest honors. Member of Sea Cadets for the past 6 years, currently Chief Petty Officer and LPO of his division. Battalion Commander at his school. Class president for the past 3 years. Editor-in-Chief for the school newspaper. 160+ volunteer hours. JV and Varsity soccer. AFA results: 6:30 mile, 56 push-ups, 3:25 plank. Interview went really well.
We were worried because his SAT/ACT scores were not as competitive as you read on this forum and because he chose a Tier 3 major (not as many of these are handed out).
All of this to say that anything is possible. Work hard, put in the best possible application you can put in, get in shape and choose a major that you will be able to live with for four years (our son struggled with this but after reading many posts on here he decided to stick with his gut).
Go NAVY!!
