son just got notification that he was awarded a 4 yr NROTC Scholarship to his Plan B school (which has already accepted him) Does anyone know when the deadline is to accept this scholarship and how does this affect his being a 3Q Candidate at the USNA (which is his 1st choice) and his MOC interview in November?

Congrats! He has time regarding accepting the scholarship. Pretty sure it's April or May. Doesn't really affect the USNA app other than give you relief that his back up plan is in place.

Would certainly mention the scholarship at the MOC interview if the opportunity presents itself. It's a great accomplishment!

+1 navymom.

It is important to understand that NROTC operates from a national perspective, while USNA starts off from a Geocentric (Congress) perspective.

It is not uncommon for a candidate to get a scholarship, but TWE from USNA and vise a verse, an appointment, but a TWE for a scholarship.

Press forward with the nomination.

Actually (going off of memory) the OP would have 30 days to accept the scholarship. He will get hard copies of all the paperwork.

He can freely withdraw afterwards if not accepted at the awarded school, other commissioning options open, etc.

Congratulations...For AROTC the deadline to accept is 30 days from offer. Absolutly no harm in accepting and changing your mind later. Its actually a plus to accept ASAP as they will have you start the DoDMERB process right away. That benefit is two fold. 1) You get it out of the way before the spring rush and can address any remedial or waiver concerns sooner rather than later. 2) USNA and NROTC may have different opinions on waivers one may waive for a DQ'd condition and the other may not. Better to have 2 oppurtunities than one. Good luck:thumb:

Thanks Grunt....you would think I would remember but my son's scholarship didn't show up until the end of March....so 30 days was April! LOL

Accept it now. If a USNA appointment comes along, you can drop the NROTC scholarship.

The two are independent of each other.

thanks for the comments. We just didn't know if the USNA Admission Board is aware that he was awarded a NROTC 4 yr at his Plan B school and if they are, how will that effect their decision with regards to an appointment. He is thrilled about the Scholarship and now feels he can relax (a little) knowing that he has his Plan B school all set to go...still in the wait for the BFE from the USNA.
