Candidates and Family Members,

I wanted to introduce myself as the Marine Option NROTC Scholarship Coordinator for the Upstate New York Region. I am located within the Capital Region and cover west to the Finger Lakes and Binghamton area, north to Champlain and Burlington, south to Westchester and everything in between!

The online application for the 2021 Scholarship is open at nrotc.navy.mil. I highly recommend you begin your online application ASAP in order to maximize your time to complete your full application.

As the Recruiting Station Albany Executive Officer, I have numerous responsibilities that are constantly competing for my time and attention, but the screening and selection of highly qualified candidates for the Marine Option Scholarship are chief among them. That being said, I will not speak to specifics on how competitive/ non-competitive your specific application may or may not be. The fact is you already know what makes you look good- a high PFT score, a solid SAT/ACT/ GPA, and participating in sports and extracurriculars at school.

In the near future, I will host online discussions to cover the program benefits, application requirements, and answer any other questions you may have. If you have any in the meantime, feel free to reach out to me here and I'll get back to you as soon as possible.

Semper Fidelis!

Welcome aboard Captain K! Great to see another Marine and the first sitting RS XO that I can recall. Your expertise will be invaluable for the many candidates who come here looking for information and insight.

Semper Fi!

Hello. My son who is not on these boards (he is not on social media) started his application less than a week ago. He hasn't been able to log in to his application the last two days. He can log in to his netfocus account and access edit profile but is unable to get to his application. Every time he clicks on his application it goes back to log in. If he enters his login /password again he just goes back to loop around again. He tried the sites phone number but no one is manning the phones due to covid-19 per the phone message. He sent an email and received a response back that it should be working now and was just due to site maintenance. He is having the same issue today so he sent another email.

Do you know is everyone having this same issue right now? Thanks for any help you can provide.

The first thing to do in situations like this is try a different browser. Sometimes errors are exposed with one browser but not another. IE usually yields good results If you're already using that try Chrome. Don't know if this will solve the problem but I worked in the industry many years testing web applications and know sometimes things work with one and not another.

Thanks Kinnem! My DH had just suggested that to my DS about 5 minutes before I saw your post. Chrome didn't want to work any longer but success with Microsoft Edge. I guess Microsoft runs most of the military websites so even though the sites are supposed to work with all/most browsers there does seem be some bugs that only like products will work/or work well with like products. Go figure.

My DS is applying for the NROTC-MO scholarship. He was contacted by a Captain by email and by text /phone call by one of the SGTs the Captain mentioned. They told him he has to take the ASVAB. We can't find anywhere in the application that says this is a requirement. They emailed him a practice test.

My question is what are we missing? Why are they pushing for an ASVAB? My DS has a 34 ACT. My DH is a retired Marine officer who says it isn't necessary unless he is going to enlist which he is not.

Thanks for any insight you can provide.

My DS was awarded a NROTC-MO in March and he did not take the ASVAB. Some coordinators may have different procedures, but it was not part of the application process for 2019-2020 cycle. Good Luck!

I don't know who Capt K is, but it's my understanding that the ASVAB is not required for the scholarship application. I suppose they might be hoping that if he doesn't get a scholarship they might be able to get him to enlist, but that can only happen if he lets it happen. That being said there is no harm in taking the ASVAB. DS took it for curiosity sake. I think the decision is up to your DS (and you).

@ChatterMom2 - as your DH told you, there is no official need for your son to take the ASVAB. I suppose the local OSO might have some unique view on that but I would bet the reality is that the local Recruiter is either hoping to convince your DS to enlist "to improve his chances" (not true) or his has misinterpreted something.

In my DS' case, the local recruiter pushed for an Enlisted contract to make the application "stronger" but once my DS advised he would not enlist that approach went away.

So, perhaps a firm position statement will eliminate this request or bring forth more clarity on why it is being requested.

Best of luck to your DS and tell your DH I said hello.

As I'm sure you know, right now standardized tests aren't being administered. To my understanding, the earliest an applicant could take an ACT/SAT will be August, at least in our region. Now, since you've already taken an ACT, you're set. Another option for applicants who haven't taken a test yet is to take the ASVAB. The minimum score to submit an application with the ASVAB is a 74.
