Hi!

I accepted an appointment to USNA '26. I wanted to hold my NROTC Scholarship spot just in case and I was trying to do that today.

I logged into my portal and saw "You have DECLINED the Scholarship. Reason: No reason found 001."

This was my first time logging in and it said I declined it?

Should I still try to hold the NROTC Scholarship or anything, or is it okay to leave it like this? Why do people hold the NROTC Scholarship? Thanks!

You were supposed to send a non binding “accept” email by sometime in late March (I can’t remember the exact day my portal told me). From that point you can email the school your scholarship was placed at if you commit to the academies or anywhere else. I wouldn’t do anything about it since you’ve already accepted your USNA appointment.

Thank you! I just got the letter in the mail yesterday with instructions on how to accept the Appointment because I couldn't do it through the regular portal. I also told my placement school that I accepted USNA so maybe that's why too.

My DS accepted his NROTC, he has an appointment to USNA. Can you place the NROTC on hold for a year just in case?
Or once he accepts a SA the ROTC offers expire. ?

I get the whole covering the bases and preserving options thing, but why would one keep an NROTC scholarship open when already accepting a USNA appointment ? As a practical matter, if somethings happens and you are DQ'd from attending USNA, you are likely going to be DQ'd from NROTC as well.

The Service Academy's and NROTC programs have a common objective of providing Ensigns and 2nd Lt's to their respective service, and holding a slot open "just in case" one opportunity doesn't work is one less young officer into the program. While I am all in favor of taking your time to decide which opportunity you want to pursue, once you have made the decision , release the other opportunities so the persons who are trying to fill positions can do their job.

I asked bc i read some people postponing rotc scholarships etc. I was under the impression that if u accept a SA the ROTC offer gets recyled to the next person as the SA would if some one takes an ROTC spot.
Is there a process to notify ROTC if you take a SA offer? Or it do they automatically know you are at a SA?

Since we are at this too, do you have to sign up for selective service since you are considered active duty? What if you are still under 18 when you show up to BCT?

Thanks

(1) Our DS had the same experience last year. Within 3 days of accepting his USNA appointment, his NROTC portal reflected "Declined." I assumed that there was some dynamic USNA-NROTC data sharing going on behind the scenes. (2) DS was also 17 yrs old on I-Day. To deal with the Selective Service requirement, I had him complete the simple registration form ahead of time and I mailed it just ahead of his 18th birthday. Today, I noticed that Selective Service allows a male who is at least 17 yrs 3 months old to "pre-register" online. I'd recommend that option which takes just 2 minutes.

To my knowledge, there is no reliable sharing of acceptance information between NROTC and USNA.

The statement that an offer gets recycled to the next person is not necessarily true for USNA. While I have observed that it does happen (or at least appears to happen, when one person on my list gets an offer days after another declines), they are technically not one for one replacements. In fact, USNA always makes more offers of appointment than they have open spots, recognizing that their "yield" will be less than 100%

Since yours was also 17 while at BCT how did u deal w his car insurance? Ours, profgressive are clueless, geico our ld one is clueless and USSA wont let him do snyting till he is at the SA by then he won have time to deal w them etc …. Did u get a power of attorney to deal w any of his medical documents, bank, insurance etc?
We will be far away to any of the academies so it is not like we can swing by to get paper work or his signature etc.

(1). On car insurance, we use USAA and I put DS on "inactive operator" status just ahead of I-Day. His portion of the premium went to zero but he was still covered under the family's policy during school breaks. Since your son's first opportunity to drive as a non-tired plebe would be Thanksgiving, you might consider amending his policy pre I-Day to reflect "college student, more than XX miles away from home") and then carving out an hour during Parents Weekend to coach your DS to gain USAA membership, obtain ultra-low cost renters insurance ($16/month), and get a quote on auto as an "inactive operator" on a family vehicle. (2). For banking, we went with Navy Federal CU and that's worked out well with me serving as a "co-pilot" joint owner to his checking and initial credit card. Once he turned 18, we terminated the joint card and he applied online for his own card. There's a convenient NFCU office on The Yard. (3) Obtaining power of attorney is a good idea. I hadn't thought of doing that but can see the potential value, especially with medical records. (4) Once plebe summer concluded late August and he had regular access to his own mailbox and PC, it became easier to help solve -- often mid-evening or a weekend -- the various "how do I do this?" kinds of concerns that arise.

USSA wont even talk to us till he is 18 and or has his active duty number.
Our insurance wont change gor him even if we drop the miles he will drive.
He will turn 18 during BCT.
Naval Credit Union office is 100 miles away. We do have an ATM near by.
He carries his own bank card and a credit card attached to us that will help him create credit history when he turns 18.
The USSA person was actually kind of rude when we called and explain the situation…. We were kind of turn off by their attitude.

Most of the Medical Records can now be handled through online request forms which requires an electronic signature. I would be careful about power of attorney as that could inadvertently cause problems with him signing for himself. I would consult a lawyer about it.

We plan to put our daughter on inactive driver status as she will not have a car regardless of where she ends up. If she gets the appointment we will look at her options through the USSA

The Navy Federal credit Union is awesome. All of my DDs have an account. Currently my husband can see there activity which is helpful because they are young and if they forget about a credit card bill we can say something. It also allows for seamless transfer of money if needed. It has made them all very responsible with finances.

Yes. We have had our kids w their own accounts that we could monitor etc if necessary. We need to figure out car insurance nc in FL is insanely expensive. The power of attourney would be done the ability . It is not a take over but just the ability to do stuff if he need us to do it while at SA.
We already asked how to make sure he shows up as active duty for voting and requesting the mail in vote

He will have time to take care of it as a mid. Plebe summer is pretty short but does end and there is enough time to get things like banking done. Generations of mids have been able to do this themselves. Voting as well because the military has a long history of multitudes of 18 yr olds who are voting for the first time and there are easy ways for the military members to vote in their home district without having someone back home managing it. Try looking at FVAP dot Gov.
