We just found out today that the son got a 4yr Navy ROTC scholarship to VMI (his second choice college). He was accepted to his first choice school, VT, and was wait listed at VMI. VMI suggested the son make alternate plans for college b/c their wait list is long. We just submitted the request to reassign the scholarship to VT from VMI. Any idea if we can find out whole long the VT wait list is and/or what is the possibility of this request going through?

CONGRATULATIONS!!!! and a question

Congratulations HookieMom and your DS!!!! And good luck to you with the reassignment process. As a Mom to a DS who is still waiting for an NROTC-Navy Option decision (application completed at end of hs junior year - almost one year ago!!! May 15, 2011 was the date he submitted the application:redface:) just terribly curious at this stage of the game, how was your DS notified today of his NROTC scholarship? On line status page update? Snail mail letter? Phone call? Pony Express or smoke signals??? Anyway, in all seriousness and respect for a great accomplishment - CONGRATULATIONS to your DS and best wishes!!!

congrats

Congrat to you and your DS:)))). I too was wondering how you were notified(we are still waiting).

Confirmed via on line status update... I checked it after we received a separate mailing in yesterday's post advising my son regarding medical appointments and such. We have not received the official notification via mail yet. I am clueless to all this stuff and I am hopeful that he'll be able to use the scholarship at VT since he did not get into VMI. Best of luck to your son.

NROTC Scholarship Reassignment....

HookieMom

Congratulations to your DS. If I read your post right. He received word of the change in his scholarship to VT. You can also contact them NROTC Command - NAS Pensacola, FL. via the phone, to get any additional info, you may need, but I will tell you, they are extremely busy, so please be patient.

Good luck, God Bless and God Speed,

RGK

PS Keep us updated

Let me clarify -- we don't have papers in hand yet regarding the scholarship. We learned of the scholarship award via his online status. We've received no response nor acknowledgement about his request for college change
(requesting a change from VMI to his #1 choice of VT). He did not get accepted at VMI but was put on VMI's wait list for acceptance (due to rolling admissions and his rather tardy application). I am hesitant to call Pensacola yet without the official paper yet we are anxious for information regarding VT wait list and the possibility of the request being granted.

If the request doesn't get granted and/or the wait list is too big, is it possible to defer the scholarship for a year and ask for the college change in the spring when there is a higher potential there won't be a wait list?

Has your son spoken to the NROTC detachment at VT about the transfer/wait list?

I have not heard of any scholarship being deferred - I believe one either uses it, transfers it, or loses it. As for VMI vs VT - which is your son most interested in? Has he spoken to unit at VMI? VT? larrys mom

We spoke to VT's detachment and they referred us to Pensacola saying that didn't have any information regarding the wait list.

DS was not accepted to VMI so it is not an option at this point (application placed on wait list but advised very few wait list applicants get accepted). DS was accepted at VT and is quite excited about it since it was top choice anyhow.

It would be nice to have some concrete information regarding the possibility of a transfer of scholarship, or at a minimum, a confirmation email from Pensacola that they received the request... so close, yet so far...got the scholarship, wrong school...

HookieMom -- the PNS at VMI can possibly assist you by being your advocate with VMI Admissions. I have read several reports on this website about this advocacy from the PNS working out well.

So, call the PNS at VMI and enlist his/her support!

PNS? I'm not familiar with this acronym... ugh, so much to learn!

The issue is that my son's desire is to attend VT, not VMI. VT was his first choice on the scholarship application... even if VMI offers him acceptance, his heart is set on VT.

I just hate the thought that he won't be able to utilize the NRTOC scholarship if it won't transfer to VT-- so much hard and dedicated work went into it!

I think the point was to work with the Professor of Naval Science (PNS) to perhaps get selected off the CMO wait list if the transfer to VT doesn't work out. Or pursue both alternatives in parallel. Would your son be willing to go to VMI if the PNS can get him in?

My son is highly motivated to attend VT, as VMI was a fall back option if he didn't get accepted at VT. The irony -- acceptance to VT and wait listed at VMI! All of his buddies from his NJROTC unit are attending VT, and this highly motivated, impressive band of brothers are eager to continue forward together.

I just received an email from VT's NROTC advisor that Pensacola has closed their wait list... seeing as we just learned of son's scholarship this week, odds aren't looking good that his request made it on the wait list.

We will revisit the conversation about VMI and see if there is any possibility of DS reconsidering VMI with scholarship in hand (assuming he can even wrangle an acceptance from them). If not, he will have to opt for VT with no scholarship... ugh.

To HookieMom: that's what my DS is doing. He received a Corps of Cadets Emerging Leader Scholarship and hopes for an in-college NROTC scholarship. He is very excited about attending VT!

Congratulations! My DS didn't get the ELS which was a surprise since he accepted his VT admissions offer promptly so we had hoped he would be in the first 100 cadets to accept and therefore be eligible for the ELS.

I wish we would at least get confirmation if the transfer request got on the wait list before it was closed. I'm trying to be a trooper about this but the feeling of not knowing and "guessing" at the status of things does not sit comfortably with my nature -- I'm working on it!

Update: Received official notification from Pensacola today that VT's wait list is closed. DS is not on the wait list. Hoping VMI will extend an offer for admissions, but it is a long shot.

So hate that this NROTC scholarship might not be viable -- so many quality candidates and feel horrible about this situation...

Hoping VMI will extend an offer for admissions, but it is a long shot.
then your best shot is to enlist the help of the PNS at VMI to be your advocate with VMI Admissions. Then, he'll need to decide between the two options of VT without scholarship, or VMI with.

yep, hoping the PNS at VMI has some luck, but VMI admissions called this morning to discuss the situation and sadly, I didn't get a warm-and-fuzzy feeling from the conversation. I'm hoping the admission counselor was just giving me a hard time (b/c that is his right as my son did make some mistakes in the process of application) but still hoping that the NRTOC scholarship at VMI still offers a bit of weight and there remains some hope for DS.

On the bright side, he still has VT acceptance.

Putting together a list of available units that are still accepting applications and have availability. Send an email to placement to request. Will assist in getting u into another unit if u truly want to utilize your scholarship. If you have above a 1250 Math/verbal sat Rutgers has availability and will accept a late application for NROTC.
