It sounds like today is a day when many people are hearing they were not selected to receive the National NROTC scholarship out of HS. Very impressed that many of you have already turned the page and are enacting your Plan B with the college programmer route. That's excellent.
I'll just share this, I think of the roughly 1000 students who received the NROTC National Scholarship 2 years ago, already, hundreds have dropped or will drop before starting their 2C year. Those selected for the scholarship are not a guarantee to commission and succeed in this program. NSI drops (more than 100), not being able to complete 2 semesters of Calc and Physics, overall GPA, discipine issues (they do drug test sometimes and that drops yet a few more), GPA, one fight, one drunk and disorderly, etc and poof journeys end. So while those selected feel they have "won" something, their risks of failing to pass the PFT, discipline issues, the journeys ahead for all of you are not easy, I suspect at least a third of the 1000 original scholarship awardees will not make it to commission. I hope I am wrong.
Conversely, I see a much stronger success rate from those who "pick up" in their first 2-3 semesters for a scholarship. Those students are "on it" to prove themselves, and often do. And when they get the opportunity, they make the most of it. People do pick up. So keep pursuing your dream - and come prepared so that in NSO you do great in the PFT, be mentally and physically fit, and pick courses you can excel in as you adjust to college.
I intend this as encouragement for those getting disappointing news today - good luck on your journeys and thanks for your willingness to serve and tenacity to find your path despite today's obstacle.
