I applied to the Naval Academy this year and found out that I was 3q'ed, but the problem is that i will probably not obtain a nomination (i realize this is because Im from Maryland). But I also got a letter today saying that I was awarded the NROTC scholarship to VMI.

I was wondering, if i take the scholarship can I re-apply to USNA for the Class of 2014?

100% yes, you can!

Would I have to re-pay the govt for the money they spent on me for the NROTC scholarship?

Just because you're from MD does NOT mean you won't get a nomination!! The Academy itself already nominated you scholastically, which is one of the main concerns of nomination sources.
Did you apply to both Senators and your MOC? Heard anything back yet?

From what I've heard, of course you can, many do... kind of like transferring between civilian universities :shake:

But do NOT give up hope!!!!
Even if all your potential nominators fall through, there's still the National Pool and the Supe's 50 and so on =)

Yes I have applied to both Senators and my MOC. One senator and my MOC already sent out the sorry letters, so I still have one possible chance of obtaining one.
But I will never give up on the Academy, it has been the only thing i can think about for the last 2 years:wink:

There you go! :shake::thumb:

From my (idealistic) POV, you're in.
When, is now the question.

But hey, you have one Senator, plus the National Pool & all those other routes to get to THAT letter

Good luck! :thumb:
(ps: at least you're not in my situation  I fought with my parents about Annapolis for 2 years, finally applied but only just in time for my MOC... that's right, I only have the ONE chance for a nomination! *gulp*
But it'll be ok )

Hey Wheeler, where in Md are you from? Did you get an LOA? My son is from MD and we have heard a "no" from Mikulski already, still waiting on Cardin (as you are) and our MOC (Bartlett--we have big hopes there). He got an LOA, so we are hoping for what Katie mentioned: the VP!!, the national pool, the supe's list, whatever, we hope USNA will find him a nomination now that they have basically said "we want you" with the LOA. So, don't give up hope, you have time to wait and decide right? What is the NROTC deadline? same as colleges? May 1?
Best of luck to you, but you are not by any means out of the running as far as MD nominations go. I was told the MD Senators and MOCs usually compare lists...so one Senator to go for you, hang tight! Hope to see you at Indoc Day, really!

Did you apply for a Vice Presidential nomination? I sure hope so, that is one more source that you won't hear about until March...

Congrats to your son, pmlutton!

But hang on - isn't the VP for children of parents MIA or POWs or dead?

Dear Katie,
The President is the one who nominates among children of active duty personnel. The VP is different.
Please check the enclosed link. The only restriction is the application dates, but the qualifications for VP nomination are:

http://www.whitehouse.gov/vicepresident/vicepresidential_nominationpacket.pdf

I hope this helps :) However, if prospective '13 candidates have not applied yet, it is too late for VP nominations

Congrats to your son, pmlutton!

Katie, Thanks for the Congratulations. It will be really cool to meet you on Indoc day (provided we are all there!). My son was born in Italy while we were stationed overseas, sure wish we could have had more tours overseas. Shouldn't you be sleeping right now?? Sorry, just being a mother.

Do you have any idea when Sen. Cardin's letter are going out?

No you don't have to repay the money. The NROTC contract is canceled and replaced by the USNA commitment that you sign on I-day.

If you don't make it in your first try, definitely pursue NROTC. One benefit is that you will qualify for a ROTC nomination - a plus if you live in a very competitive district.
Good Luck!

I AGREE!!!!!!! It's closing on 3am over here :frown:
But the Extended Essay (IB Diploma candidate over here ) is due in something like 55 hours.. and I'm writing it in maths...

Well hopefully I'll be there too!! I'll let you know
Oh Italy that's cool! Everyone's always disappointed when I say I was born in Chicago, but then again I've spent 1/18 of my life living in America

Maybe due to the whole time thing, but is there any special eligibility for the VP nom? Looks to me like he can just nominated who he wants to, like a Senator or Rep, but nationwade.

Katie, yes he can nominate without geographical restriction.
See you later!

The VP doesn't actually pick. The admissions office makes the pick of who gets the VP nomination.

So... what's the point?

[sorry if I'm being difficult, I don't usually ask that but it just seems... really weird and useless! - tho helpful for those who receive the noms ]

Qwerty 52: I have no idea reallyl. I did call (and pestered them this morning) and Anne Irby was off today. I then proceeded to call my MOC's office, they tell me they have Mikulski and Cardin's lists and were using them to make sure they don't duplicate nominations. That is how the MD people do it so as many have a chance as possible. In any case, Bartlett's letters might go out by the end of the week, I am only guessing, but Cardin's might go out this week also. I will update you after I have called them to pester them with the question again tomorrow. I am a great believer in hearing things from the source...so if Anne Irby tells me the letters are going out, we are set!
We are from Carroll Co., you? How about Wheeler? where in Md are you from? Here's wishing the best for all of "us" on this forum, think positive, think we will all see each other in Tecumseh Court on Indoc day :) Katie: go to sleep!!

It is just traditionally another source of nomination. The letter goes to the VP's office, but the decision is up to each Academy. The VP's office delegates the choices to the Academies because the Academies know who is qualified...

pmlutton...I live in Ruppersberger's district which had 8 LOA's so it was really hard for me to make the list, congrats to your son though, I know you are really proud of him. I already accpeted the NROTC scholarship, but if I get an appointment I can just write a letter to the NROTC office saying I decline because of the USNA.

Yes I applied to for the VP nomination

And thanks to all the support during this rough and long journey...I know I will become a plebe some time soon
