DS just got a call from the NROTC CO saying he was awarded 4yr scholarship. What happens next? He has listed his five schools and has applied to all. Not sure how school assignment works.

Not sure how the scholarship itself was awarded, but basically his application now goes to another "board". They basically go through his list of schools, in order of preference, and if there is an opening at that school for a scholarship midshipman, then the scholarship will be assigned there (They try to keep 50% of the scholarships in-state at any given school). Very few schools are full this early in the process so he may very well get his first or second choice. Late in the process the openings are fewer and kids end up with their 4th or 5th choice. In the past, when all the schools on the list were full, an applicant could find himself with a scholarship to a school he didn't even apply to - and then the scramble begins. But they help out in those cases.

Congratulations to your DS! He's off to a fun ride of growth! :thumb:

I think you got an "early warning" ahead of the official notification which would include the school also. Kinnem is correct on the process (two separate boards) but you usually learn of scholarship and school at the same time if I remember correctly.

Next step will be to sign an acceptance letter (non-binding) within 30 days and then you will be notified to have a DODMERB physical.

Congratulations on this step but there are many more on this journey.

Thanks. He was selected for an ISR. He did the final video interview with the CO yesterday and the CO called tonight to say he was selected. He should have no problems with getting into his five schools. 4 are in-state, 1 out of state and 1 is a state school, although that is choice 5 and he just picked it because he needed state school.

Check the website. Once we got the email we checked the portal and it had his school choice.

I think there is one lady tuft does the school assignments. I believe it is strictly based in availability at the time the board approves you. DS was also ISR.

They told us in the email that the official letter would come two weeks after it showed up on the web portal.

Sounds like you are on your way!! Congratulations!

DoDMERB Physical

Get that physical set up as soon as you possibly can.

There are a bunch of little things that can slow the process down.

Spend some time on the DoDMERB section of this forum and you'll see what I mean.

Congratulations and best of luck to your DS.
