NROTC Scholarship

My DD got several conflicting statements about boards. From the Battalion where she (as of Tuesday) received her 4yr Navy Option offer Boards met in Aug and then about the first week of each Month starting in Oct thru April. The "recruiter" who worked her application with her also said roughly that same schedule. Her application was complete the second week of October and the website was updated on 6 Dec 11. She made a couple of calls to the NETC to update school choices in that time and asked when the boards would be and was told they review the applications weekly and then when approved by the Admiral at NETC they update the website. My guess is they meet an official board and then the staff reviews the results and processes the approvals, submits for DoDMERB etc and the Admiral approves the completed packages once a week and that is when notifications go out. So for example an application may have met the early Nov board, was ranked high enough to get an offer, the staff then starts at the top one and works down from there so number 1 gets the offer within a week but the ones closer to the cut may be a month. Just a guess but after 20 years in the military and knowing how active duty boards work, that seems most likely. Good luck to all the candidates who are still waiting. My DD is much relieved and it will make the wait on the Academies much eaiser.

^^^ Yes, unfortunately the Navy does consider it classified information. The only place you can even find rumors about the dates is here. If you were to check all recent posts by PFlyingJ17 (I think I have that right) you might find a list of unofficial dates. Not certain though. My memory is getting feeble, or I was told to forget them right after I saw them.

Nope, not from me. Boards are confidential. :)

Does anyone know/understand how immediate scholarships work? Who can hand those out? Does anyone know how many URL scholarships will be offered this year for HS seniors?

Nobody will ever know the exact numbers until after they are awarded, at least that has how it always has been. Sometime next fall they may or may not release how many went out, and what the avg stats were for that current yr group.

However, usually that is difficult to find even via Google.

My son received an ISR in September and exactly 3 months to the day later he noticed on the website that he is awarded a 4-year NROTC scholarship to his first choice (Boston University). So far no email or letter, but the site says he should be receiving the questionnaire within two weeks. Not exactly sure when his status changed; he was checking the site once every few days.

He cleared DodMERB for USNA so he should be OK for NROTC. Boston U is one of the 12 schools to which he applied, that he is waiting to hear from re: admission. He has 3 acceptances to date.

I just called quantico and they said that everyone should know by the end of the week since they are assigning schools now.

My son received an ISR in September .
Can you tell me more about the ISR? I seem to get conflicting messages from this Board, as well as NSTC bulletins. At first I thought it was for the single most qualified applicant in a recruiting region who had a complete file early... say by end of May. Then I read NSTC bulletins that seem to indicate that the ISR is used for diversity recruitment. Are you able to clarify?

Good one dunninla! Yeah, I'm pretty old. I think my Bachelor of Civil Engineering degree (no science!) is pretty anachronistic these days.

As to the ISR (Immediate Scholarship Reservation), "immediate" means 3 months I guess in his case, but what it really meant is that he interviewed with the local CO who essentially selected my son for the scholarship in early fall. A contract was signed at that time saying he had a NROTC scholarship reserved subject to certain things on the part of each party. My son agreed to gain admission to one of five schools in a technical major, medically qualify, stay out of jail, etc. The CO then sent the contract to NSTC for confirmation and unit assignment. I think I have that right. I do remember that they asked for one more recommendation from his calculus teacher. FYI, he started his NROTC application in late June and had it complete sans the interview in early August I think. (One math teacher never responded, so he had to switch recommendations mid stream.)

The ISR does not specifically target diversity recruitment. It is intended to recruit prospective NROTC candidates who might have other scholarship options, particularly early in the college decision process. In my son's recruiting region, which stretches from Oregon to Bakersfield, I think they told him there were 8 ISR recipients last year. He never got a number for this year, but it is more than one. The scholarship is exactly the same (non-binding, all the same restrictions regarding unit choice, etc.). I think it may be a marketing/recruiting tool more than anything. But, it worked. With the ISR in hand, he decided the Navy is for him and stopped pursuing Army, Air Force, and Coast Guard opportunities.

That's my understanding, hoping someone can correct me if I am mistaken in any way.

^ that makes sense. Last year, my DD's NROTC recruiter told me by phone in early June, with some urgency, that she was one of 6 identified in Socal for "fast tracking" if only she could get her application complete and interview done by the end of June ... which she couldn't, so she went in the regular pile at the end of July. I never did learn whether what he had said was true, or hyperbole motivated by his own "completed file" quota, or whatever the metric is to evaluate recruiters.

Has anyone heard if the notifications from the most recent selection board are out?

Yes. At least from what my XO told me, the results from the first board are out. I called NSTC in Quanitico and the man I spoke with said if I didn't see any changes on the status page then I wasn't selected on the first board and will move automatically on to the next board. I didn't make it on the first and am hoping for the next board. It's worth a call to your XO to just make sure. Good-luck!!

Congrats!!!!! To all those who received the scholarship, I wish u guys good luck in NROTC and in the future.

I've been checking my status for 2 months and I still have not heard back yet, and I am kind of concerned because I am a tier 3 major and I can't swim but I will take lessons this semester into the summer hopefully.........I don't know how my chances stack up against other people  but I will not lose faith, people like you give me hope! :thumb:

Found out this past Friday that DS received a 4-yr Navy option scholarship to UW. Pretty excited, and honored! Fairly confident his admission application will be accepted, but UW doesn't make admissions decisions until March, so the wait continues...

Found out Friday received 4-yr NROTC scholarship to University of Virginia! Waiting to hear from the school. Tier 2 major and package was submitted mid-October.

Congratulations on UVA.. MY DS is 2nd year there and chose it over Annapolis and has never regretted it. Best of luck.

As I'm sure you know it will be a long wait. As I recall UVA informs no one prior to April 1. Hang tough and congratulations. :thumb:

Congratulations! Could you post some stats like ASVAB, GPA, etc.?

My son enlisted in the Marines (he is a senior in H.S.) and was given a ship date of 9/3/12 however he has been recommended to apply for a NROTC scholarship. I am unsure if he has a good chance to get it or not and wondering if it is worth pursuing at all- applying to 5 colleges, taking the SATs, etc.

Would love any thoughts/advice.
Thanks,
Mary

APPLY!

The only chance anyone here should ever give you is that he has 0% chance of getting one if he doesn't apply.

We certainly can't chance your son without any stats. Plus a lot depends on the colleges he applies to, the major he chooses, his leadership qualities, athleticism and sports, etc. Statistics will vary by battalion. The basic scholarship selection criteria are here:

http://www.nrotc.navy.mil/scholarship_criteria.aspx

These are the minimums. Your son will need to be well above the minimums (normally, there are exceptions I'm sure).

Here is the profile of the USNA 2014 class. As 95% of USNA applicants also apply for NROTC it should give you some sense of what your son would be up against. As USNA has to meet geographic criteria while NROTC is a national competition, the SAT scores may not be enitrely representative.

I expect someone saw something in your son that makes him competitive to recommend it to him. In any case you would need to hurry as Jan 31 is the final deadline for applications this year. I'm sure you are also up against college application deadlines if not pass some of them.

My recommendations based on no knowledge of you financial situation:
1. As Pima says, you can't get it if you don't apply
2. When you say he has been recommended to apply, do you mean the recruiter mentioned it to him or what? Would a conversation with whoever it was who "recommended" him be in order?
3. I would say above all be guided by what your son wants to do about it after an adult discussion with him.

Move quickly and good luck with whatever y'all decide. :thumb:
