So I am a freshman in highschool and did JROTC for a few months but then had to drop the program, not because I didn’t like it, but because of the scheduling. Only one school in my district offers the program and I live 30 mins away so I had a hard time getting there. If it was at my school I would definitely do it though. I had originally thought of going to an academy but I think ROTC is a better option. Do you think that dropping JROTC hurts my chances for a scholarship and or an appointment to an academy? Thank you!

It will not. JROTC is not universally available, as you know, and even where it is, a student can have many legitimate reasons for not participating. There can be some advantage in getting a JROTC nom, and there are points attached to JROTC participation. But if you have other leadership experiences, they can well replace and even surpass JROTC. Do what’s best for you. Most cadets/mids didn’t do JROTC.

Not at all. I’ve performed over 100 interviews for NROTC applicants and while those with JROTC experience were often strong applicants, many without that experience were just as strong or better.

Keep a high GPA, crush your SAT/ACT, stay fit, and participate in the extra curricular activities that do fit your schedule.

Good advice listed above. However, if there is no jrotc unit, have you looked into whether there is a Sea Cadet program closer? That may also be a great opportunity. Best of luck to you, and as the others have stated, keep on your grades, PT, and being involved in activities where you can demonstrate leadership ability.
