NROTC Scholarships

User97,
I see what you’re saying. I will add this information to the Navy ROTC thread 2022.

Give me a little while for the update I’m at the store and my wife is looking at paint. I think I would rather rub my teeth on sand paper then look at 50 shades of tan. They are all the same color, I just want to leave.

If the award letter listed a major, then you must major in that subject. If it's not obvious which Tier it is, consult the referenced web page shown above. If it still cannot be determined then call the unit and they will be able to tell you. Actually, if you were awarded a scholarship then it really doesn't matter what tier it is... you already got the scholarship. It could come into play if you wish to change majors, which is easier to do if your new major is in the same tier, or lower, as the old major.

How about for current college students? My DS is applying within the GWU Capitol Unit
Yes, they do. Freshman can re-apply for the 4 year scholarship. Of course it would only be for 3 years since it wouldn't kick in until the autumn of their sophomore year, should they be awarded one. They can also apply for what NROTC calls a side-load scholarship for which only NROTC midshipmen compete. There will be a few opportunities to apply for this. This was my DS's plan B at his first choice school. He won a scholarship which kicked in the middle of his sophomore year. It takes hard work, good performance in the unit, good academics, and volunteering every chance you get.

DS was notified by email this morning that he picked up the NROTC 4-yr scholarship! He is a college programmer and second time applicant.
Nothing better than getting this reward for hard work, fitness, and leadership. Please extend my congratulations to your DS.

Do you think that all the considerations for this months board are made or do you think they will still be notifying people for a few days?

My DS was turned down by NROTC today... This has turned out to be a very competitive year for the NROTC scholarships... Our recruiter thought for sure that my DS would get into either USNA or at least receive an NROTC scholarship... Could be the competition in California... In either case since we knew going in the USNA was a long shot and he has been preparing for Plan C and he has been accepted to three different UC schools... Now the final decision process for him is beginning to develop... this is a really tough year for parents!!! Go Highlanders, Bobcats or Banana Slugs!!!

No joy for DS. He has some great stats and was going for a tier 2 scholorship. Brighter side is that he was accepted to all of his top choice schools. We’ll pick one and he’ll join the NROTC unit as a college programmer. Of course I’m a bit sad for him and my pocket but confident he’ll use it as fuel and work hard to get a CP scholarship.

My son was in the same position last year. He enrolled in NROTC and took a similar schedule as the USNA plebes. He worked very hard and earned a high GPA. He re-applied to both USNA and NROTC and was awarded with an appointment and a scholarship. Encourage your son the re-apply. This board is full of college reapplicants who get appointments or scholarships.

DS got the three year at GWU! He couldn't be happier!

Is there any way to get an NROTC scholarship during your first year? I have a friend at Columbia that joined ROTC after one term. Does he have a scholarship or will he have to continue paying tuition?

The reason I am asking is because I wish to reapply to USNA 2023, but did not know you should not do this from other service academies. My plan B was always USCGA (which I got in early). After getting in, I decided not to finish my NROTC applications, because I knew I would rather go to an academy than ROTC at a civilian school. I was accepted into Carnegie Mellon which was my plan C, but now I am put between a rock and a hard place. I really want to serve in the Navy, but going to CMU could potentially mean getting out student loans. If I go to CGA, the chances of being able to successfully reapply to Navy are very slim. If I could get NROTC at CMU, reapplying to USNA would be a lot easier, and I would be on the path to Navy if I got rejected again...

Thank you

Much rather look at 50 shades of tan, than be dragged along to watch "50 Shades of Grey." :D:rolleyes::D

Very poor planning. Yes, you can re-apply for the 4 year scholarship during your freshman year. Your application looks better if your already doing NROTC. You can also apply for sideload (in college) scholarships while participating in NROTC. Of course applying is different from being awarded a scholarship. The competition is intense.
