My son received a letter of non-selection for the NROTC scholarship, today. Does this mean he was eliminated before all of the review boards have completed?

Also, is there any way to review his application to verify it included some of his items that were submitted after his initial package was completed, sports accomplishments, Varsity Captain, etc.

Is there any process for re-consideration?

He has a 4-year scholarship from another branch of the military, but the Navy is his preference.

Now he need to decide if he wants to gamble the full 4-year scholarship to wait and resubmit to the Navy next year.

Any insights into the process and/or options he can explore would be appreciated.

Thank you

My suggestion is to call the recruiter that handled his scholarship application. Maybe other people have other suggestions. . .

the boards still continue meeting until the end of April - there are 4 more board meetings according to the schedule i saw posted. my status on nrotc scholarship is still undecided.

i don't think he should be applying for a 4yr scholarship next year, unless he is going to take a year off from college. the usual way is to sign up for the Navy ROTC "College Program" at the college/university he wants to attend, and then during his apply with the NROTC Commander at the college for a 3-yr scholarship for the remaining 3yrs.

Second Consideration

Is there any other information on requesting a second consideration?

Your local Naval Recruiting office handles the application first and sends on their recommendations or opinions.

Before the app is considered by the CNET board all of the support documentation must be completed.

The CNET board then evaluates all completed applications.

The reason I restated the steps for you is to say that I think if your son wants to be reconsidered he needs to communicate with the CNET board.

If I were in your shoes I would call or have son call the 800 (866?) numbers on the NROTC scholarship website and ask for their advice on how to do that.

Also ask them to help you determine what was the hitch in the application.

Your son may still be able to go to the school of his choice, join NROTC w/o the scholarship and apply for one mid-year.

Knowing where his application needs to be strengthened will help him if he has to go that route.

In any case, make sure you get your financial aid forms done.

Good luck.

(I know a little about NROTC scholarships as I am going to apply for one when I become eligable and am pretty well versed in AFROTC scholarships so this is my 2 cents) My suggestion is that if the re-eval does not work out, your son should take the other ROTC scholarship to the school of his choice. I say this for two reasons. 1 is that there is no obligation (to my knowledge anyway) until the sophmore year begins. If he spends a year in that branch he will be able to be sure he does in fact want to go Navy. Second is it will also pay for a year of school. He can then apply for a 3 year NROTC scholarship. (I can not remember if you have to take NROTC the first year to apply for the 3 year but you should be able to find out pretty easily.) He can also apply to transfer if that school does not have NROTC or if his NROTC scholarship does not apply there. All in all there is no real reason for him to NOT take the scholarship he has unless he simply does not want to. My final suggestion is that he continue to improve what he can to improve his odds if he reapplies.
