NROTC Selection Results Just Posted 3/15/23 pm

Congrats to your DS!!! I am not even going to tell my son this - he didn’t receive anything yet so I will handle the stress by myself! 😊

Same here. My son was copied on an email last Friday to his coordinator asking for additional information. It is stuff he already provided to her so I am assuming she either didn't have it in his file or they just couldn't locate t. Either way I am guessing that means he wasn't reviewed yet. 😬

Thanks. I hope all goes will for your boys. The process took forever for mine. He actually had everything submitted probably in early January but in processing his app they somehow stuck the same teacher recommendation into both slots so it got kicked out and took >1 month for them to resolve the issue. In that time, the #1 school he had selected rejected him. So, he cannot reach out to their Recruiting Officer to see if they could help with admissions.

Very respectfully, I disagree. A college rejection (or wait list) is not necessarily like Humpty Dumpty's shell that cannot be put back together, despite the efforts of all the King's horses (and all the King's men). It's a decision that can certainly be reconsidered. Your son really has nothing to lose in (also very respectfully) reaching out to the cadre at his number 1 choice to ask them if there is any support they might offer, and also to ask the admission team directly to request that the decision be reconsidered. If he is sincere that he'll go there if admitted, why not try?

I wouldn't consider this a high probability likelihood of success at all, but you miss 100% of the shots you never take. Depending on the school, current PNS etc reactions typically vary from a swift "can't help, nothing I can do" or from admissions and immediate "no" to tremendous support. My DS was wait-listed at one of those ridiculously hard to get into schools and their PMS wrote a 3 page letter advocating for him and hand-delivered that to the university president. To be clear, DS was very clear he wasn't yet decided on Army or that even school - very up front, and yet they advocated for him nonetheless and loved his honesty. He received an acceptance a few days later.

Hope that helps - good luck!

Thanks. I should have re-phrased what I wrote. DS was actually awarded a 4-year AROTC scholarship that matched to the same school (before rejection) and reached out to the PMS and had an interview (this is a school with <<10% acceptance). He got the feeling from the PMS that they had very little if any pull on admissions. Then he was rejected from the school (not waitlisted). He contacted the PMS/ROO and informed them of the rejection (they wished him best of luck but did not offer any further action). Then he just got the NROTC scholarship matching to the same school. This school however is part of a consortium so the PNS is not stationed at the school and DS has not interacted with them. It seems unlikely a PNS at a neighboring school who he hasn't interacted with would help get him un-rejected.
He was also awarded a 4-year AFROTC scholarship this week and 2 other very reach schools expressed some interest so he's focusing his efforts on those.

I thought a PNS or the equivalent at AFROTC would be very involved with cross-town schools since the scholarship money has to go from his detachment to each school.

I can see how the process seemed like "forever" while waiting. To apply in early January and have a positive response by mid March is actually quite quick. Keep in mind there are people who submitted applications in August or September (maybe even earlier) who still do not have a response either way. I understand the frustration of the mis-entered recommendation though.

There is no way to know if the board has even reviewed yet, right? Also, it is my understanding that the last board is next week. If that is correct, does that mean we should hear one way or the other by the end of the month or is there any timing for final decisions? We have a few contingency plans, but my NROTC son has a twin brother who also cannot finalize his decision. Not knowing about the NROTC scholarship may be harder on my non-NROTC son! LOL

For those waiting on decisions: candid recommendation is to buckle in, be patient, and be aware you may not hear for another 4-6 weeks. They are balancing understanding who among the scholarships offered is taking a different path (SA, different service ROTC, etc.) and keeping an eye on that evolving "above the line" bar of who will be now be presented (or not presented ultimately) with a national scholarship offer. In years past a larger waive of decisions went out in Mid-April, just a few more even later. in one particularly tough afternoon a large group of hopefuls each received a "TWE" email. Yes, some candidate decisions will be announced sooner perhaps 1-2 weeks after the last board convenes through official channels or in some cases sooner through unofficial word - plus or minus a few days - but for the entirety of remaining candidates - don't count on an immediate decision after the final board. Think of it as a good thing as they are tweaking/ adjusting/working to offer to the desired end-number of people to move forward- they have a target in mind and are iterating to maximize landing as close to their target as they reasonably can.

"Not knowing about the NROTC scholarship may be harder on my non-NROTC son! LOL" - Why? Is because if one twin gets the national scholarship, there is a larger pot of money available for the other Non-ROTC twin to use? My only recommendation here is to plan as if the scholarship may not be used all 4 years - not everyone who accepts the national scholarship makes it all the way to commission and serve Some end up having to pay the scholarship back if they use it for more than their first year but don't maintain standards - just a fact.

Good luck to all candidates.

Thank you for the reminder that we still have a good ways to go before we might hear something either way. I for one have read and heard this several times over the last few months, but I still check the portal more often than I should...especially a week or two after a board ends. Just keep reminding ourselves that no news is good news and keep working on alternate plans.

Thanks for your feedback. My son plans to join NROTC with or without the scholarship. Without will have an impact on where both boys attend college though. My non-ROTC son really just wants to make a final decision. Unfortunately, I lost my job recently so I have to appeal FA anyway, but would like to understand the real need before I do so. Lots of moving parts! I will try to be more patient!

@GWU PNS - Can we please gets status from the last board? Thank you, Sir.
Putting a little less data in this go round because we're chomping down to the last boards here and that takes some work. And my peaceful spring break is screeching to a halt as various students are wandering back on campus and yelling and screaming, which is distracting....

We are now up to 809 selection announcements that have gone out. 12 of those are Nurse Corps, so that leaves about 7 of those yet to be decided.

The most recent board had 159 selected. 25 of those were Tier 3 (15.7%).

There were a handful of notifications for those who had been on the alternate list, and they have been notified.

What we really need right now is all of the service academies to push out their selections/appointments. Then those who prefer that option will decline the NROTC option and more spots will open up. But without that happening, we're at the mercy of the service academies and we won't know which Tier majors will jump ship which means the Tier 3 alternates are in limbo. So, short of prayer or making pagan sacrifices, there isn't a whole lot more to be done. On the good news side, there's around 170 spots left, give or take.

Hoping for the best for those of you waiting patiently (or impatiently)

My son has worked through this entire process on his own, which I'm proud of, meanwhile I know very little about how all of it works once the application is submitted, so the waiting and wondering has been nerve wracking :) ! Your updates are VERY much appreciated, his status was updated to alternate so your updates on these threads on where things are have been incredibly helpful ! Thank you !

Do we know if portals are updated from this week? I hate to harass my son to check his (again 😂 ) if they are not there yet.
