NROTC Ship Selection 2026

For those in the know, what is SWO-USV? I see it says something about unmanned vessels.

Is that something that came from service assignment, or something they volunteer for?

We could tell you, but then we have to lock you away at the Surface Warfare Schools Command (formerly known as SWOS)........

I had to look it up early this morning. It is Unmanned surface vessels. I believe it was service assignment when it was decided, but I don't have 100% confirmation.

Anyone ever heard of this: Suppose an NROTC mid got SWO but really didn't want it, is it possible to cross-commission out of NROTC?

Getting drafted into a community happens. Nuke is the best known and sometimes feared draft, but it happens in SWO also. In the past there was drafts for Aviation which surprises alot of people. A 1C can try to see about getting into another community before commission, but the "needs of the Navy" will always prevail. Not having your choice of community is a downside of NROTC, but it is frequently told to the Mids. It should not be a surprise.

My DS's roommate and good friend wants to be a SEAL, but he is aware that if he doesn't get it he will likely be SWO drafted. It would suck and I hope for him to get selected, but he knows what the possibilites are and is just doing his best to get his 1st choice. That is all a Mid can do. Do your best and see what happens.

Thanks for the info. I should've been more specific though. I'm not asking about lat transferring to another warfare community (i.e. SWO to NSW), but rather can NROTC midshipmen cross commission to another branch? For example, can you commission into the Air Force instead of Navy if you didn't get an aviation selection with the Navy?

Ummmmm lol good luck. Perhaps technically it *could* happen? But good luck with that.

That’s why it’s called service assignment. Not service selection. Like @Ihavenoidea said, needs of the Navy.

Signed,
Sub draft momma

Cross commissioning in ROTC is very rare to begin with.

That case is probably near impossible because Air Force selects pilots from AFROTC right before their senior year I think, and NROTC tells midshipmen their service assignment (SWO, Subs, Pilot, etc) around the middle of fall semester senior year.

NROTC and AFROTC also have different metrics to decide pilot slots. Different screening exams. NROTC doesn’t place an emphasis on civilian flight experience while AFROTC does with regards to pilot selection.

Thank you!

As mentioned cross commissioning is very rare, from both NROTC and USNA. For those that do manage it, it’s usually years of work to support their case. Usually something that drives them to seek the path. Just because someone gets a service assignment they do not desire, it won’t lead to them cross commissioning.

Its been mentioned about how difficult it can be to cross commission. Think of it this way. The Navy invests $$, time, and manpower to train a Midshipman for 3.5 years to be a JO in the Navy. The particular Mid then says "I don't want to be a SWO or in the Navy now, I want to go to the Air Force now". It if was allowed all the time, the Navy looses their investment and a Mid trained JO. The Air Force now has a JO trained for a different branch that they now have to retrain for the Air Force. It is the same as a 1C Mid saying "I changed my mind and don't want to serve anymore".

Though the branches are all under the DoD/W, they are still separate and have different budgets, communities, mission sets, etc. They work together closely, but they are still separate entities. You can't really go from one to another easily.

Understood. Just wanted to know if it was possible and or if anyone had ever heard it happening.
