Hey everyone, NROTC is doing its ship selection today and are hosting it on a livestream on YouTube. Out of curiosity, is NROTC ship selection the same as USNA ship selection now? Last time I remember, ship selection for NROTC was where you put in your top 3 choices and your ship is chosen for you, but now in this livestream it seems as if you can say out loud which ship you want and if its available you will get it. Does anyone know if this is really the case? Or is this just some special once in a lifetime chance for NROTC?

Last year midshipmen chose their ship based on what was still available in the ceremony. Went by an OML. Moderators call out when fill-ups happened.

Order of Merit List - rack and stack ranking of all commissioning midshipmen. Generally they get to choose first based on this, but there are a few spots offered to specific midshipmen and these are held until that person picks when it's their turn. Fun to watch - it's on now.

I could be wrong but I think OML is just an Army term. A similar process of ranking occurs within NROTC, we just don't have a term for it, as far as I know (i.e. I have never heard a single one of our AD staff use the term).

do the commissioning mids know where they stand in the merit order? if so when do they know this?

At least for the SWO selects, my DS found out his standing on the list about a month ago. Not sure if rankings for any other communities are published, since SWOs are the only ones who pick their first duty assignment.
