My DS portal was updated to “No decision has been made” yesterday. It explains on the NROTC site that this status means the application is being or has been reviewed by a selection board. Since the status was updated during a board review, does it mean his app is in someone’s hands being reviewed, or they’ve already reviewed it and the answer is not yes for now? (I know this is probably impossible to know for sure, just wondering if there’s a common historical pattern that I’m unaware of)

A board was completed today. And the draft scores amd rankings are being tabulated and prepared to be explained to the Admiral at NSTC. If she approves the board results, then the email notifications will be sent out. Based on the status you are seeing, the "no decision has been made" basically means they are waiting for the Admiral to review it. That will likely be next week but things have gotten busy so we jist have to see how it goes.

My daughter was notified she was placed in alternate status in early February. Any insight as to when she might find out the final decision. She reached out to the coordinator she was assigned to early this week because she did not hear anything back. Coordinator had no clue, and mentioned two additional boards in March. Reading the earlier posts sounds like there were boards this week. We are so confused! The portal states "No Decision Made."

The portal will continue to reflect a no decision made until they reach a point where they know for certain which alternates will get selected or not. We have quite a few people on the alternate lost who are tier 3 majors. As the amount of tier 3 slots is closing out that means some alternates lower on the list may be selected. I think by the end of March things will clear up.

One last question lol! So my daughter was not accepted to her #1 school. We knew it would be a reach because it only accepts 10% of out of state students. The remaining top 4 she should be accepted to. Does this affect the decision (since she is on alternate status) and does she need to change her schools in the portal? Her application is already submitted so the tab for changing schools is not available.

The schools selected have no bearing at all on selection. The truth is that the boars has no idea of a student is accepted to a university unless they share that information.

Thank you for this explanation. So, once the Admiral reviews the results, what are the possible outcomes? I’m guessing my DS will either get an acceptance email, or his portal status will change to declined, or it will stay on no decision made if he’s selected as an alternate (he’s also tier 3). Am I on the right track?

You are correct. Some will be notified of acceptance, some will be notified that they did not make it this season, and some will be on an alternate list. Not every alternate is notified that they are on the alternate list.

@GWU PNS Thank you. For those not notified of alternate status, does their current status remain "no decision has been made"? I guess this is much like applying for USNA (which my DS is also doing) - unless you've been unquestionably declined, you're still in the game.

Correct again. I like to say no news is good news.....or at least it isn't bad news.

Alternate letters or emails tend to go out in the earlier boards as a way to encourage an applicant to complete their college application. It means they scored close enough to the cut line that the chances are good.......not guaranteed, but good that they would get selected.

But if everyone offered accepts the scholarship and if noone offered shifts to USNA or another service branch........ well then there would not be a lot of alternates open spots. It changes every year and is very hard to predict.

@purdue1234 When did he receive an alternate letter? My portal has said no decision has been made since like November but I never received anything specifically saying I’m an alternate.

My son's status is also "No decision has benn made". He just finished his interview on Feb 9th. This is fast!

If he just got his App in on Feb, then he will likely not go before one of the boards until March. They got a ton of App at the end of Jan and beginning Feb. It seems to take a few weeks to gather them together to get them lined up for a board.

I'm going with the "no news is good news" until we hear either way........course that doesn't mean I still won't check the portal every day;)

I'm curious, is the alternate list, or at least notifying applicants that they are on an alternate list, a new thing this year? I have not heard of this in years past.

I could answer this, but then we would have to put you in isolation until next season 😎
