NROTC Summer Cruise

jiller59-Your DS still probably learned quite a bit in that short time. My DS is to report to Charleston for NPS in August without ever being on a sub. He thinks he wants fast attack subs but we shall find out in about a year. Two others from his unit that just graduated will be joining him there on the same start date. Until then he is working at the nrotc unit collecting full pay and refining his golf game.

Congratulations to your DS for his accomplishments, and to you for the part you played in his success. He didn't get to attend CORTRAMID since he wasn't on 4 year scholarship, right? What did his training the other summers consist of? I am sure NPS is intense so I hope he enjoys his summer before reporting.

DS was on a ballistic missile sub for 24 hours last summer and requested sub for training this summer. He expected to be on a sub for a few weeks this summer, then his orders came showing a 9 day sub tour, which ended up being only 2 days! With travel he was gone just shy of 6 days - he thinks it may be the shortest cruise ever:wink:

I hope you keep posting here while your DS continues his journey so those of us who are behind you can get a bit of foresight into what's coming.

DS received the 2 year side-load scholarship so he did not do the 3rd and 2nd class summer cruises. For his 1st class cruise he did EOD where he decided against it. I see it as a slight problem for college programmers and side load awardees as not being able take part in all of the summer cruises as they are certainly enriching but it does save the Navy a few bucks. He went to Charleston last week and got an apartment and will room with a class mate from his University. The sub guys(and gals) are all flush with cash receiving their bonuses a few months ago.
