I am not taking an English my senior year. My English teacher of of 2 years retired and I cant contact. Will my freshman English teacher work for this, or do they have to be more current?

Ask the school to forward a letter from you to the retired teacher asking politely for a LOR. Most retired teachers are more than happy to oblige.

It doesnt ”have to be” more current, but advice in general I got through the college process was you want someone from junior Year ideally. They know you as you are now, and have known you for a full school year and can speak to who you are As a person. You senior year is very different than you freshman year, so your freshman year teacher might not know the person you have become in three years if that makes sense

Our son's senior math teacher became his guidance counselor, so he listed her name and email for both spots. NROTC said no. Couldn't have same person twice. He worked with his NROTC regional admissions counselor to figure out how to select a teacher they would approve of for the evaluation. Maybe, IF you cannot reach the retired teacher, it might be worth an email to your regional admissions POC. Good luck to you.
