NROTC to USNA paperwork question

My DS is a college reapplicant who is on a 4yr NROTC scholarship and was appointed last Friday. He will review the required paperwork with his NROTC but we have a question. When he accepts the appointment does that immediately cancel his NROTC scholarship for next year? What is the latest he can sign off and decline his NROTC scholarship before leaving for I day or is it required by NROTC to be competed by the end of the semester before he leaves his spring semester? He's worried if he gets hurt before Iday that the USNA won't want him and he gave up his NROTC scholarship but not yet at I day does he have nothing then?

Good question, but probably beyond the expertise of those here. Would recommend that he talk with his NROTC chain of command. I suspect that the NROTC Admin Chief has encountered the issue before, or can find someone that has. I went from Enlisted (NAPS) to USNA, and my recollection that I maintained my enlisted status and was on orders to USNA until I -day. I have a DD-214 documenting my enlisted status up to I Day, and a DD-214 documenting my service as Midshipman and Officer. (DD-214 is a discharge certifificate)

Yeah have him talk to whoever handles admin for his unit. It's been 5 years since I did it so my recollection is a little hazy, but I think I signed something at the end of the semester releasing me from ROTC and the scholarship...I had almost two months between finishing the spring semester and reporting for I-Day and I avoided pretty much anything that could have gotten me remotely injured or at risk to lose my appointment.

Posted basically the same question several weeks ago. If you receive a helpful reply please send me a PM...

Like I said, talk to your NROTC admin. They'll know better than anyone else as units may handle it differently. I accepted my appointment in March, that didn't automatically cancel my NROTC scholarship. I still got paid through the end of the semester. Once I disenrolled from my school, I also was dropping my scholarship.

Agree with others. I believe the way it works is that when he reports to the Academy, NROTC will be notified at that time. It would be good to confirm though, either with the cadre or with admissions.
