Hi everyone,

I would love some advice!

I am currently studying cyber security at a community college. I would ideally like to finish the associates and transfer to complete my BS in two years, starting fall 2020. I would love to do NROTC marine option - however, I would like to do advanced standing because I don’t want to go on scholarship. Is this possible for marines or just for navy? And Can I start my last 2 years, or would I have to have been in the program for all 4 years?

I am willing to consider just transferring this fall and getting a three year degree, however, I still would want to do college option/advanced standing, because I want my AD to be 3 years, not 5.

I would also consider plc, if NROTC is not an option. I know I can apply for that my junior year for sure. This option does not obligate you for anything unless you take financial assistance, right? But they will pay you for summer training info regardless, correct?

How competitive is PLC? Is it like ocs/NROTC, or less competitive?

Last question: is it possible to do plc or occ this upcoming summer as a sort of internship, one which doesn’t commit me to anything? Can one do these while in community college with the intent to transfer?

I'm not too certain for NROTC, but I believe you only have to begin with two years left of school (so you would be in good shape I believe). However I am not sure how eligible you would be for a scholarship as those are extremely competitive as a Marine option and would most likely be granted to the college programmers who have been there since the start.

As for PLC you will have to sign a letter of intent I believe that would state you intend to transfer to a 4 year university, as you cannot get a BA/BS degree from most community colleges.

PLC is the most competitive commissioning route for the USMC, however if you score very well on your PFT (290 above) with good grades in college, you should be fine.

As for the internship, that is what PLC is, an internship. You have zero obligation to accept your commission into the USMC (unless you accept tuition assistance) and can drop from the program at any time before commissioning.

Thank you! This is exactly what I am looking for. If you happen to find out whether the college option is indeed acceptable for students who will only attend two years of school, that would be fantastic. I’be tried asking a few NROTC staff, but haven’t heard anything from them.

After doing some digging I do believe you can join NROTC as a junior in college.

Good luck.
