DS received a 4 year NROTC scholarship. The contact with the NROTC Medical Coordinator said they send his file to BUMED (whatever the heck that is) on March 12th and that it could take 8 weeks for the waiver decision. She said:
"If you would like, you can provide information related to your DQ.
1. medical (Dr. notes, tests, pharmacy records) from age 13 to present,
2. personal statement regarding physical activity- distance of running per week/pace, if you have any instances of shortness of breath, or require medications (inhalers, daily use medication, etc).
You can submit those items to DoDMERB for inclusion in your package for BUMED review. Submit to the DoDMERB help desk at: usaf.usafa.dodmerb.mbx.helpdesk@mail.mil"
Two questions:
1. He had a remedial and sent the AMI stuff back before his Dodmerb file reflected DQ. So they have his medical records and his one and only appointment where he was prescribed an inhaler when he had a pretty bad upper respiratory infection. He wrote a letter that accompanied that medical record that stated most of the information in her #2 but not in detail and that was last October. He mostly addressed that he does not get short of breath from running and only has had wheezing incidences a few times and always when he was clearly sick with fever and obvious infection. I guess he could write another letter reiterating lack of asthma meds and how much activity he is currently doing (high school varsity track). But, here is the question, should he?
2. He cannot find anywhere with his NROTC application portal that his file has gone to the waiver board so we aren't sure where to be watching for the waiver decision. His Dodmerb status has not changed for NROTC. I guess just watch the Dodmerb for it to say waiver granted? Or something? Anybody know how we will know if/when he gets the NROTC waiver?
