NSI Iterations

My son is slated for NSI 2 this summer and is trying to also attend freshman orientation at his university. He is also a military dependent and lives overseas. Because of this, we are trying to have him tag on some extra time in the US to go to orientation and also visit his grandparents. Has anyone dealt with this before or had any issues having the NROTC units manage the travel dates to allow for some "flex in arrival and/or return dates from NSI to allow for this bonus time?

Additionally, does anyone know exactly what they must bring, must not bring, and can bring to orientation. Do they bring any basic toiletries at all? Is everything down to their underwear really issued? What about such mundane things as laundry deteregent, deodarant, etc...

Just to clarify your question, are you asking what they can or cannot bring to the NSI event? Or to the new student orientation at their NROTC unit? If it is the latter, they bring whatever they need for the university or what they will bring to their dorm room. If for NSI, it should be in their information packet.

Just to save time, since you are overseas, the information packet is attached. There is also a check sheet to make sure everything needed is included. But if assigned an iteration already, then your son has already mailed in his package. He can reach out to his unit if he is trying to report to the university early. The tricky thing is that most universities have a "no earlier than" report date if staying in student housing. There may not be a lot of wiggle room there, but maybe you know of someone in the area who can host him for a few days?

The NSI packet is here because it's a huge file. I added the checklist as an attachment.

I found out today that I was assigned to NSI 1.
Thank you. That’s good info to know. Did you receive an email informing you? Was it your only contact with Great Lakes or did the inform you that your package had been received?

I received an email from the CMGO Staff notifying me about the date. If you haven't found out yet, it could be worth calling your units HRA and asking them. They will most likely know.

My son is concerned he has not received a reply from NSI group. His package was received 4/29. According to his tracking number. He has received no communication from the Navy.
We postmarked 4/29 as well. Package received 5/5 and we just heard back today. My son emailed NSI while waiting. He was told that 3 people were going through 750 packets and yours would hear back when they got to you.

A good thing to check for is whether or not being assigned to the 3rd iteration will work or not. If it won't work, the sooner the unit is aware of why it won't work the sooner they can push for assignment to the 2nd iteration. O say this because if a prospective Midshipman realizes too late that they can't make it to the 3rd iteration and the 2nd iteration has started, then they will be reassigned to the following summer and most likely miss their CORTRAMID.

Does this mean that at this point having not received my assignment I am more likely to be in the 3rd iteration? This is actually the one that works best for me and was planning to request a switch if I was assigned otherwise. I submitted my package on the 30th.

You could be in 2nd or 3rd. Of 3rd works best, you should let your unit know and they can advocate for that.

So after many emails to both Great Lakes and to the school went unanswered for a few weeks. Someone eventually got back to inform my son that his NSI package was incomplete because he did not have a 2nd Covid vaccination. He took care of that and sent in the updated information. 2 days later he had an email stating that his package was complete and he was assigned to NSI iteration II. The email address that was effective and that he received notice that his package was incomplete was different from the email address in the NSI package. Thanks all for sharing your experience’s with this. It help us discover that something was off.

If you get a moment, can you share the incorrect email address that was sent out in the NSI package? I can send that to the Placement director so they can get that resolved.

Captain Meyers,
Looks like I was incorrect. The email that got a response & the email listed in the NSI info is the same address
GRLK_NROTC_CGO@navy.mil
No worries. It still shouldn't take them weeks to respond but that group email is supported by 2 people for 1200 applicants 😲

So everyday they wind up performing the miracle of the fishes and loaves to make things work.

Is there any flexibility with the arrival time on day 1? My son is finishing another program at 1 pm on Day 1 of NSI 3 and won't get to IL until at least 10 pm.

That question needs to be sent through the NSI email in the packet. Considering 3 iterations were offered I am not sure there will be that much flexibility. There is a chance DS is told he has to do NSI the following year which means no CORTRAMID potentially.

Thank you for replying. My DS contacted NSI and they replied stating it's up to his HRA to book his ticket. They didn't answer his question about there being a hard time for check in. NSI 3 is his priority, but he's hoping to do both programs if there's flexibility on Day 1 arrival.

Hos HRA may be able to answer, but if the intent is to check in at 2200 on the first day, then the real question is whether the first day can be skipped.

OP, I'm going to offer just an unsolicited perspective as the parent of a fellow MIDN trainee who made it through NSI a couple of years ago- regardless of whether NSI will allow that late of a day 1 arrival, I would not recommend it.

This is day 1 of your son's Navy training and journey. Show up on time to NSI using the flight that is booked for you by your coordinator Ask the earlier/ Non NSI program if he can leave, even a day early if need be, even if that means an added cost of a flight change or uber etc. to prioritize and get off to a good start with the Navy. I think you'll agree after attending that it should be a goal to not stick out in this program. Also fyi, an incredible volume of intake/ orientation activities happen on day 1, each hour actually in the first days of this program. Be there, mentally and physically ready, and don't saunter in a day late and try to catch up. This program for many is hard enough that in recent history >100 people who just won a national 4 year scholarship don't finish NSI for various reasons. It's no joke. Take it seriously, make it a priority, start strong - you'll be glad you did if you do.

For smiles, a fellow parent 3 years ago asked if a TV would be brought in on day 1 so the intake trainees could sit around and watch the world cup on arrival day. After you finish NSI, I think you'll see why that was pretty hilarious.

Sincerely hope that helps - Good luck -Semper Gumby - always be flexible to the schedule and needs of the Navy. Good luck to your son and all trainees.
