Does anyone know if basic toiletries (soap, shampoo, toothbrush, etc), female hair necessities (for putting in a bun, like hair ties, gel, hairbrush, etc) and other basics like underwear, socks, uniforms etc are issued at NSI? The packing list we received is extremely brief (documents, $300 prepaid Visa card, running shoes, 1 set of sweats, 2 days of civies, 2 underwear, feminine products) for a 3 week training environment. Thank you for any insight or details anyone has.

This is an excellent forum but this question basically has been a black hole here (it might be a black hole because the search engine rejects "NSI" as a singular search word. NSI will publish a packing list but for the real deal I recommend you contact your college and ask for a "sponsor" who is a current freshman and completed NSI last summer. If female specify. They can give your kid the real deal about NSI, NROTC program, life on campus, dorms, parking, meal plans, etc.

This was much more useful for us than anything either the university or the NROTC cadre did for us to date.

I did a search of NSI packing lost and found this one......

They gave us a packing list last year, but it was for the Midshipman Instructors. If I remember correctly, they give you absolutely everything there. You put everything you brought with you in a box on day one, and your backpack is packed with it. We never wore our running shoes, and never saw the clothes we brought until graduation. Better to be safe than sorry though.

You only need to pack your preloaded debit card and then you buy all your toiletries and such at the NX.and bring medical records if they told you to. You should get a list but it’s short because you start with zero basically.

Quick question - Does NSI allow the use of electric razors? When I went through enlisted boot camp and OCS, it was razor only. Is NSI the same?

I thought I read somewhere awhile back that it was no electric razors at NSI, but I can't find it now. I would say just go with disposable razors just to be safe.

Mom of a daughter who went through last year - yes, everything is issued/purchased. The packing list is brief for a reason - follow orders and pack what your told. You are outside at the beginning and are made to hold and run with your bag, if you pack a lot or pack large, you will be made to regret it. They will also take anything not on this list. You will be issued underwear, bras and socks - not cute but functional...my daughter immediately got rid of them when she returned home. Also a swimsuit for pool day. She took her toothbrush and feminine products, everything else was provided. Not luxury but isn't supposed to be. Wear your running shoes to report and dress for the weather...it can be very hot a humid. I believe she said you could wash your personal underwear/bras if you preferred at night and chance them being dry in the morning if time allowed. They were issued running shoes last year but they were extremely heavy and were given the option to run in their personal shoes if they had them.
