The US Navy has adopted the NWU Type III uniform effective October 2019.

There is a chest rank slide holder in the gig line of the blouse for a rank.

The NEX/Vanguard does not offer Midshipman chest ranks slides for the NWU uniform reflecting 1/C, 2/C etc.

Example: USNA chest rank

The only place that currently has them is the US Naval Academy and they will not sell the chest ranks to non-USNA midshipmen. The company, Sayre, that manufacturers them also will not sell them due to the constraints of their federal contract.

Basically, there is no place for any USMMA or NROTC midshipmen in the USA to purchase a rank for their uniform.

For mids doing their Sea Year project on the USN vessel, this leaves them without a rank.

They’re midshipmen, I can think of not a single person that will care that they don’t have a rank insignia. Pin on the metal rank if they really want.

Yeah, I never really cared back then nor after. . . .and just how many do their Sea Year on Navy Vessels, anyway?

Our son will be heading out on a carrier soon with 4 other midshipmen for a few months. I can't imagine walking around without any rank insignia on a military base or vessel while in uniform. When he went to Airborne school this summer he had the same issue at Ft Benning. They thought he was in the CIA.

I seem to remember a story of some classmates wearing khaki garrison covers with blue coveralls because the LT insisted they not go outside uncovered and garrisons were all they had. Everyone thought they were the blue angels. KP Life

I just found the NWU Type 3 Midshipman regulation. Unfortunately, no ranks are available for purchase by USMMA mids.
  • NWU Type III Blouse Insignia.
The rank insignia worn on the NWU Type III blouse shall be an embroidered “slip on” insignia. The slip on insignia shall be placed on the insignia tab located on the outside and center of the blouse. For the NWU Type III blouse, a slip on insignia made with NWU Type III material is the only authorized material that shall be worn.
    1. Midshipmen, First Class.
Wear a slip on embroidered eagle and anchor insignia on the insignia tab. Note: when wearing the NWU Type III uniform on the Yard, 1/C Midshipmen may wear the metal rank insignia representing their current midshipman rank (e.g. MIDN CDR, LCDR, etc). This is the same size metal rank insignia worn on the collar of the working blue and khaki uniforms. The metal insignia shall be worn such that the gold bars run horizontally on the insignia tab of the blouse.
    2. Midshipmen, Second Class.
Wear a slip on embroidered anchor with two slanted stripes insignia on the insignia tab.
    3. Midshipmen Third Class.
Wear a slip on embroidered anchor with one slanted stripe slip on the insignia tab.
    4. Midshipmen, Fourth Class.
Wear no insignia on the insignia tab.

hold on here folks----Are you telling me you expect KP to provide uniforms, like-full uniforms, to the mids?

Nah--don't happen. whether its only half get heavy coats, or full sets of whites, or SDB's, etc. or, that the NEX would have enough insignia to purchase for the appropriate rank? Nope. Not at KP at least, that is my view from afar

You sound like a very concerned parent. Has your child asked the KP administration for guidance on this yet? This is their
issue to solve.

Uniform issues have been a constant source of aggravation at USMMA for at least ten years that I know of, and the administration is well aware of the issues. My kids have gotten most of their missing uniform pieces from graduating mids who give away what they no longer need. The current status seems to be to make sure 1/C mids have all their uniform parts and not to worry too much about underclassmen.

Every E1/2/3 in the actual Navy walks around every day without any rank insignia on their Type III’s. Every midshipman doing time in an aviation squadron walks around in a flight suit without rank insignia. They won’t be out of place.

Never had an issue with uniforms in 4 years. If I did it was because I lost something. The admin doesn't care about the kids collar devices for the few weeks they may be with the Navy. Don't know why you would do sea year with the Navy when MSC is available.

Sea year rotation with US Navy because son is going active duty Navy and he will be exposed to array of different officer specialties.
