OK, so I just signed into my portal and it says "Your File has recently been closed by Admissions for this year. You should have already received correspondence about this closure, or you will very soon. Please contact your Regional Team if you have questions or concerns." Which, yeah, I suppose I should be contacting my regional team, but... can anyone tell me what this means? Pretty please?

In that case, somebody who has access to your portal closed it, or USMA closed it as part of the initial screening. The former is unlikely.

Ahh, so basically I've already been turned down. Alrighty then.
Thanks. :)

You should contact admissions before thinking that. It is possible there was an error.

Always, always believe what admissions tells you over anything you read on an open internet forum!

BA/mom3boys; I already contacted my admissions officer [I believe - to be honest I'm not sure of his 'technical term'] and he said that he believes it was closed because of my SAT Math score. Thanks for the advice, though.

Buff; I replied, thanks.

how can you be rejected so early in the process? Can't you take the SAT's in October?

I have always thought applying too early (before you're fully ready) is risky. Of course you can retake the SAT. And it is entirely possible that you had reasons why the Math score wasn't great. But please don't submit poor SAT scores. It is not like you don't have any time left before the deadline.

If I were you. I would tell the admissions that new SAT will be submitted, if that is what you can work on to improve. Find a good tutor and work over the summer, almost anyone can get over 650, at the least.

Something is amiss....
in another thread he said his math sat was a 570. That would not cause an outright rejection.

Even 570 may not be enough to bring him far into the process.

buff - that's interesting, this post says:
http://www.serviceacademyforums.com/showthread.php?t=13267

GPA - 4.0 unweighted. 4.25 weighted.

SAT - Math: 570, Verbal: 660, Writing: 770

The above scores, in an of themselves, will NOT cause an application to be closed. In fact, the Math is on the cusp.

Now, if he submitted a Math SAT of 510; I doubt that would cause the file to be closed in July, since there is plenty of time to re-take the SAT's and improve the file.

edit: okay, the Math 510 post was a month ago (June). While a 510 Math is not competitive a 570 Math is moving in the right direction.

Resubmit scores.

Hi,
If you file was closed, it was probably closed for two reasons. First, inactivity. If there is not movement within a file for over 60 days, the Academy will attempt to contact you to request that you update your file or they will close it. If nothing if heard back, it will be closed.
2nd, if you are deemed as not being academically eligible to compete for admission, then your file will be closed. If this happens, you will receive a letter in the mail explaining while it was closed. In the letter, it will have explained that if there is improvement in scores (and going from a 510 to a 570 is a good improvement) that the file can be reopened. Please contact your regional admissions team with the updated score (recommend having it sent in by your counselor or by the testing service as in the end it will have to come from one of these two anyway). They will most likely reopen the file. No guarantees, though, as there might be something else in your file that caused it be closed.

As for sending in poor test scores. USMA evaluates the best test scores in each section. You can score a 790 Verbal and a 400 Math on one test and a 790 math and a 400 verbal on another and west point will give you 790 790 for verbal math for your record. Same goes for the ACT. Of course, if that really happened, West Point might have some questions as to why the large variance. Ensure that you take the writing test for both, though. It is best to also take the test as many times as possible.

And, as always, it is best to finish your file ASAP. West Point can do more with a complete file than with an incomplete file.

Good luck.
