O9R pathway?

I'm at the Citadel without a contract for year 2, and the army department says they won't get much money for them this year.

I've considered O9R for a while, but my dad keeps telling me it's too risky because the national guard can hold you in and prevent you from going active duty, and if you aren't able to go active at the start, you never can or something like that.

Is there a line you sign that says you can't be held by the guard? That is the only thing that would get my dad off my back, and give me peace of mind that it would come down to my performance on the OML, instead of the national guard's decision to do what they want because they need officers.

If it's possible to be guaranteed for the guard to let me go, what is the best path for it?
I would prefer something where I am signed to the army but the guard has me, and I myself have to choose to stay with the guard. Doubt that exists, but wondering.

You're Dad is right. The Guard can, and often will, keep you from going AD. If you take their money they can dictate where you serve.

BTW, I have no idea what an O9R is, but I know the above to be true.

The Guard cannot “keep you from going AD”, but you will have to finish your service commitment to them or get a conditional release to permanently switch from the Reserve Component (NG or Reserves) to the Active Component. Some high-need career fields may ease that transition.

It is atypical to go from RC to AC, but there are multiple pathways to achieve that outcome. It’s similar to switching branches. Not common and it involves some legwork, but very possible.

Get a hold of the In-Service Recruiters at Fort Jackson or Fort Stewart-Hunter AAF and pose your question to them. They will likely have some additional insight.
